Re: suburban ambulance

I don't have any but I have seen them offered on eBay. Perhaps a search will pull up a couple.

I remember 20 years ago, the city of Hempstead Texas had one. It was parked, with other city vehicles, in the median of Hempstead Highway. It was cherry looking.

I wonder what ever happened to it?

Re: suburban ambulance

ive been doing lots of different "images" searches. the one I just got actually shows up a lot. I think it was on e-bay for a second before I snatched it up through a fellow burb fan. this one was purchased by onyssa?, Oregon in 1970. musta been a peaceful town, cuz it still only has 50,000 miles on it.
I think the last owner gutted it and lowered it (blasphemy, in my workin mans opinion). I don't really know yet if I want to restore the interior to some form of ambulance condition, but I definitely want to have some idea of the appearance. by the way, I think you have a green 4x4 burb on 33s or so that I love, that looks like my other 71 would have looked original and restored if the rust wouldn't have got beyond my time vs. .money limitations of the last 10 years.

Re: suburban ambulance

I can get you Cadillac Ambulance photos. My brother is a member of Va Beach Rescue Squad and they have a Caddy Ambulance from the 60's.

Let me know if you are interested and I will get them posted.

Re: suburban ambulance

Hi AC/BC,
Enclosed are a few pictures of my 1971 Suburban which was purchased over three years ago. The plan was to eventually turn it into an open/convertible instead of retaining the hump which made the vehicle entirely too top heavy in handling and unpleasant to drive. Progress is still ongoing so the pictures are before and after shots. All original ambulance equipment has been retained for now. Making a snap on tonneau type convertible roll back top is next. It has less than 15,000 original miles now.
Thanks and enjoy!

Hi O Blue K20,
More pictures as files permit per your request. Middle/before photo is blurry because it is a picture of a picture. Thanks, Jeff

Re: suburban ambulance

How is the progress on this truck? Do you still have that rear bumper with the storage compartments? I need one for my restauration! Thanks!

Re: suburban ambulance

Hi K20chevy,
Thanks for asking about the 1971 Chevrolet Suburban ambulance.
The truck was revived to original running and driving condition near the same time my wife of 29 years filed for a divorce.
Needed to sell the truck as a very kind couple from Ohio bought it several months ago. I drove it to them and it was a beautiful last drive to a great family.
Last I saw the truck, it was up for sale again in the same pristine condition as previously, with the rear tool box bumper in tact. I think the new owners also had a nice 1967 Pontiac Tempest for sale too.
Take care and I hope to be back in the 67-72 truck saddle again soon.
Jeff

Hi Jeff,

I´m glad you put it back together the way it was when in Service. Sorry to hear you had to sell it. Have you by any Chance looked at that rear bumper and have a Company Name for me, that built the bumper? That would facilitate looking for one, if I knew how made These. I´ve seen them on multiple ambulances on Pictures and my Panel had it, but when I bought it, it was just gone.

Thank you for the info and reply!

Ralf

With all due respect, these trucks should be called Suburbulances. QED

Ralf - Information I've been able to dig up indicates that those rear step bumpers with the compartments attached were a custom built feature on Suburban ambulances made by the Challenger Corp. and were not a commercially available item.

I'd be willing to bet that unless you get real lucky, one would be near impossible find today. You'd probably be better off trying to fabricate one on your own from readily available materials. Those who restore vintage emergency vehicles have to resort to this all the time for such items.
