I found this magazine ad (circa 1982) for a "Chevy V8 Special Economy Truck" that reportedly got 20 city and 28 hwy. Anyone know anything about this? First I thought it was a diesel, but the ad never mentions diesel or what size V8. Thought it was interesting.

like any good promo add it lacks any specs.

probably the same setup my 86 had.

305, 700r4, 2.73. gutless wonder.

I would think with 2.73's it would have to work too hard to get 28 mpg, but maybe not.

I don't think the new pick ups with the 5.3's and new 5 speed's hit 25 MPG... how on Earth could a less aerodynamic, heavier pick up do that?

I don't think the old trucks are heavier than the new ones; our 2002 GMT800 is quite a bit heavier than our previous trucks -

Yea I just dropped a used 87 tbi 350 in my 84 and slapped a carb on it and it surprises me how quick it is even with 2.73's. Its will burn the right rear clean off the rim almost to 3rd gear if you don't let up....From a straight standing stop, hell you can't even try and make a right turn into traffic in a hurry cause it will just spin and you don't go anywhere..lol

Ive heard of this before. 305 2.73 rear end with the dodge 5 speed trans and the first attempt at electronic spark controll. Under perfect conditions its possible just not likely.

Oh, did I get from you? I'm really not sure. I've had it for a while, but I just paid attention for the first time and I just don't understand how 28 mpgs is possible. If you are the source, thanks for a great looking ad!

"Your mileage May differ depending on speed, distance, weather. Mileage will be less in heavy city traffic. ACTUAL highway mileage LOWER."

In other words, the big numbers are meaningless and irrelevant.... lol

It all probably means 50MPH tops, drive on long stopless desert roads and do it while it's not raining. It has to have the light-duty everything on it.

There is a guy on another forum with a 2wd diesel burb getting 32mpg hwy. 6.2/700R4/3:08 or 2:9?

My 4x4 LWB gets 32 highway, using A/C and going 80. I just pop it down a gear for hills rather than push the accelerator down harder.

Is that 32 litres per 100/k, because I just don't see how you are getting that in MPG.

I'm lucky to get 25 city/back roads LOL

and I HAD a welded rear so my city/back road MPG was worse before I put an open carrier back in it.

I guess it's the gearing. 700 junk R, NP208 junk that blows out of 2hi under hard breaking, and 3:08 ratios. I'm running stock suspension, stock tire size, every like 6-8 months I use fuel booster, I keep my side windows up as much as I can, and I downshift rather than give it more fuel.

Are you talking instant average, or average per tank? Either way, you would have prove those claims for me to buy them.

Basically a couple trips, mostly long-stretched back roads on Delaware Rt. 9 or going up to the Poconos... popping it down a gear for hills to maintain something between 75 and 80mph.

My regular driving, I get 25-27. This includes some city, mostly highway, and mainly 85-100 mph EVERY morning, manually shifting the trans for hills.

The thing is, even if it were true, no one would ever believe that. I dont care what method your using to conserve fuel. You got a gas motor and a 4x4 long bed. I got $100 that says you are doing your calculations wrong cause there is no way i will believe you get better then 20 Miles Per Gallon. Especially not at 80 with the ac on. More like 17 tops is what i would believe there.

Oh,I don't believe it,either,but you better get all the fact straight before doubting someone. The fact is,he has a 6.2 diesel...check his signature.

I know one thing,I get my best mileage at 65 mph...2-3 MPG better. Once I get up to 70-75 it drops off and that's with taller tires spinning lower RPMs and on the hiway that's an advantage. I'm at about 1800 RPM and that's the sweet spot.

Grandfather had an 86 Jimmy with 305 2.73 700R4... drove it highway at 55mph.... got 25pmg. That's what they meant.... I slow truck thats geared to the max and cant tow or haul....
