Fire Extinguisher-which one - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

These pictures are why I need to ge a Fire Extinguisher for my truck. This car fire happened last year across from my hotel in Toledo and the owner did not have a Fire Extinguisher on board and the results are in the pictures.

So with this ... what Fire Extinguisher do you all recommend. Thanks

Any kind is better than nothing!
ABC dry chemical are the cheapest & what can be found at most general stores, but that powder in them is very corrosive to electronics & makes a huge mess (but still better than your truck burning to the ground). Carbon Dioxide extinguishers are great & no big mess; however the plastics horn type nozzles are kinda bulky. The best is halon (older type) or halatron (new fancy more enviro friendly version) a clean agent that is perfect for our vehicles, but expensive too.
Personally, I have an old halon that was taken out of service ... price was free, because it would have had to been disposed as hazardous waste now since the extinguisher company will no longer service them (stupid EPA regs). So it is technically no good, but reality is it's still charged & will work!
If you have a fire extinguisher servicing company in your area, I'd ask them. Sometimes they have used extinguishers for sale (not pretty & shiny but have been services/inspected) or may have an old clean agent you could "dispose of" for them

Man a ‘70 chevelle gone. That’s awful I bet anything it was one of those clear fuel filters failed.
I’m ordering two of these this week.

I have a half dozen 5 and 10 pound Kidde extinguishers around the house and garage, and use the smaller sized Amerex in each of our 5 vehicles. Pictures like that convinced me to make sure each vehicle is equipped with one.

This is what I carry in my truck. I'm not saying it's better than any of the others already mentioned in this post, but better than nothing. It's compact so easy to store in small places and/or carry a few in each vehicle.

If you have ever used and had to clean up ABC dry chemical you would never buy another one again for automobile use. I have and it was a toss up on whether the fire or the ABC did the most damage. Halatron all the way. I have one in my 72 C10, one in my 65 roadster, one in my Jeep, and two mounted up in my garage.

A few years ago, I started carrying a Fire Extinguisher in both my trucks, on my Tractor, and one in the Garage. Haven’t NEEDED any of them . Yet, but I all never have to run looking for a way to “Put out a fire”.

Here's something to watch for- this one is on the wall in our attached garage by the house entry door. I just happened to glance at it while heading out of the house and noticed it was plugged by a mud wasp. Just something to keep an eye on if you leave the garage/shop open.

I have a Halotron 5 lb. in my ride. Would not have anything else.

I saved guy's '76 Corvette at a cruise night a few months back. Ended up using about a half of the charge, but it is still in the "Good" range.

That thing knocked the fire out quick!

The fire appeared to be transmission fluid which leaked onto either the hot headers, or was ignited by the starter motor.

He had just arrived at the cruise night, but wanted to move his car over a bit. Cranked it up and pow, fire! Freaked everyone out, that's for sure.
