Re: '60 GMC Suburban (Project D-Daddy)

Looks really great. The stance is near perfect. I was looking for the caps before and they really are hard to find. I thought the 59's looked the same only the color was different, however the diameter is wrong. I saw a 2bbl mainifold on ebay yesterday for 20bucks they say it's unused from a dealers storeroom. it's still available. If you lower the hitch height will you run into problems dragging the trailer tounge? Can you make an extension to clear the tailgate and keep the 19" or so tounge height.

For a 51 year old engine, 30 psi and 19" of vacuum at idle are pretty damn respectable. I love these V-6's!

Just bid on that intake, thanks for the heads up!

As for the trailer, My tongue only sits about 12-14" from the ground when level. The trailer has a 4" drop axle. I rarely scrap anything, although it's a ***** to get the foot on the installed jack without a seperate jack.

Re: '60 GMC Suburban (Project D-Daddy)

I got the stance finally about where I want it for now (until I can afford a real drop). I put the TJ springs back in with a set of helper blocks to stiffen them up. Then I installed a set of air shocks and everything is working great!

Here are some pics from the local car show last weekend. Enjoy.

Re: '60 GMC Suburban (Project D-Daddy)

Very cool set up. 220 miles !!! sounds like a great trip. There was a car show this weekend near my house and a guy had a 64 longbed and a rebuilt 47 teardrop. My wife looking at his finished truck (the sme color as mine will be) started to warm up to my truck.

Re: '60 GMC Suburban (Project D-Daddy)

You going to install the same setup you had on the pickup or are you coming up with something different on the Suburban? I have been following the other thread on the GMC pickup with the 351 in it and they finally settled on the 2bbl Holley. Not a big fan of Holley carbs, but they seem to like it.

Re: '60 GMC Suburban (Project D-Daddy)

I won't be going with two carbs again, just one Stromberg 97. I went back to one carb on my other pickup and kept one of them before I sold it.

Although, I just got 12 mpg towing my camper last weekend with the one barrel Holley, so it makes me nervous to change anything. My other truck only ever got about 9 mpg towing. That was with two carbs though.

Re: '60 GMC Suburban (Project D-Daddy)

My truck and camper got 10-12 it's whole life. The PO logged every mile (where he went and how much gas it took and how many mpg) It never varried no matter where he went. Single carb seems like a much more dependable and less hassel set up though the twin carbs look real cool

Ah ha! I was waiting for someone to notice those. They are '55 Buick caps but the center "flippers" are from the Olds Fiesta style hubcap. I made an insert (out of 2 1/2" exhaust pipe) that bolts to the flippers and pushes into the cap and VOILA! At the car show nobody knew what they were except one old man; he knew the Buick cap and figured I took the flipper from the Olds cap.

They are not staying as I am on the hunt for original type poverty caps.

Well, I received my NOS ebay intake about a week ago and had it blasted. Then I installed my 97 and this is how she sits, almost ready to go on. Have to order the intake gaskets yet.

Re: '60 GMC Suburban (Project D-Daddy)

Question on the gas tank work you did. I just got a 61 Chevy Sub and I am rewiring the entire truck and I noticed that the sending unit for the tank is on the top... or I couldn't find it anywhere else anyway! When dropping the tank did you have any problems or have any advice on that process? Are there hard lines going to fuel port on the top or soft?

Thanks,

-Panelrodder
