T 5 transmission question

Hey guys. I'm browsing the classifieds for a used T5 transmission and I came upon this one. I'm no expert with these but thought it unusual to see these 2 long rods on each side to support the bell housing. Is this the way it's supposed to be or someone's quick fix?

Have not seen the rods... but some had a big block of steel about 10 pounds hanging on the tail shaft for anti chatter purposes, that may be another version of it.

Re: T 5 transmission question

It was built that way.

The T5's are pretty weak especially the self adjusting clutch mechathey use. I saw that on my friends S10 when we were swapping clutches, and looked it up online.

So I think it was to help the casing prevent flexing.

One of the S10 5 speeds I have has them too. It was pulled out of a stock truck at the salvage yard near me. The rods are pretty beefy. When I put the 5 speed in my "67 I6 truck I didn't use them.

Thanks once again for all the good info. Would you say that it's a good idea to take whatever trans I buy , take it to a transmission place and have them give it the once over before it would ever go into my c10?

I was lucky, I drove the truck around the salvage yard before I bought the transmission out of it. It might not hurt to have it checked out if you don't know anything about it. They aren't that hard to pull out if you have trouble after installed but it would be peace of mind if you had it done.

Re: T 5 transmission question

A follow up question would be, if I bought a T5 with the electronic speedo, how hard is the conversion to a mechanical speedo drive?

I have used my GPS, a Speedhut GPS speedometer, https://www.speedhut.com/gauges/ , and Dakota Digital conversion. They all work well but tend to be pricey unless you happen to already have a regular GPS.

Re: T 5 transmission question

Good stuff here. When I swapped one in I did not use the rods. It just hangs from the bell housing. The T5 works great behind my 250 six.
If you are looking for a good OD gear you probably need a 80% reduction or less in fifth gear.
