A/C compressor conversion

I've heard you can convert an old a/c pump to fill air bag tanks. Does anyone know what needs to be done. I would also think I would need some kind of swith to turn it off and on like a home compressor. Any ideas.

Re: A/C compressor conversion

Look for a York 210 compressor. You'll need to fab up mounting brackets, or find someone to make them. I'm not sure what all is involved in the plumbing, but it should not be that difficult.

Re: A/C compressor conversion

I'm in the homework stage of this mod too. It's looking like the main problems will be 1.mounting (have to fab own brackets and find the room to put that big sucker) 2.connecting airlines, because apparently the connections to the pump aren't NPT,though I hear kilbyenterprises can help with that.3.pulley to run it.This won't be a problem for me so much cuz I'm running a v belt, but if you're planning on a serpentine system, then you'll be needing to talk to kilby again .
anyhow, here's some reading for you.If you need anything else,I got lots of results when I googled "onboard air".Have fun with it!

http://www.kilbyenterprises.com/faq.htm (a good diagram to give you an idea of the set up on this page)

Re: A/C compressor conversion

Wow, I had something like that for the JC Penny A/C unit that my truck came with. I ripped all that crap out when I swapped motors. The PO took the belt off the compressor in an attempt to save gas and I sure didn't want to tran and deal with it.

I also have an almost complete how-to at http://www.airridetalk.com/tutorials.../air-on-demand. Its more complete than the one at bagginit.com, and it actually has pictures.

Re: A/C compressor conversion

ur york should work all u need it to put an air filter on one side and and run the other side to ur tank but figure how to use a pressure switch or toggle switch to kick out the comp when ur tank is up to pressure

Re: A/C compressor conversion

SlammedDime, thanks for the link. I may look to make this change at some point since I have a feeling I will play with the switches more than I thought I would in the beginning.

Re: A/C compressor conversion

hear is a link there are cpmpressors and brackets i have put 2 of these on one on my 2000 silverado and one on a 2002 S-10 you need a tep switch to shut it off if it gets hot and a pressure switch to shut it off when tank is full you can run them bolth through a relay connected to the clutch on the compressor
it creats a lot of heat so you need a leader line that will withstand alot of heat and pressure for the first 2 feet or so out of the compressor so the air has some time to cool off and a check valve at the tank is a good idea so you dont get blead back once the compressor is off

While I'm sure the Sanden compressors are great if properly installed, they require more maintenance than a York, and on top of that, I would not buy anything from AIM if you could help it. I can't recommend enough that everyone stay far away from that company.

Re: A/C compressor conversion

yea i know what you meen its was just where i knew had good pics i went down to my local AC shop and had them rebulid me a comprossor that i got from a wrecking yard and built a bracket desighned after the aim bracket put a oiler on one side and a seperater on the other side and it has worked great for 3 years
i know peoepl that have had problems with bolth the sandedn and the york if teh sanden gets hot you have to change the plate under the head and i know some guys that have had the york rod snap and rod bearings go out
i prefer belt drivento elect always though much more vol and quieter

Re: A/C compressor conversion

Anyone make a bracket to mount the York on a older V8? I feel like a jackass for tossing all that crap last year.

My engine is newer than my truck. My alternator is on the passenger side if that helps at all.

Re: A/C compressor conversion

I have a York compressor out in the shop right now. It came off of a chevy truck with a small block in it. I've been saving it for the same type of conversion but I can take pics of the brackets.
I might be able to build a duplicate set of brackets also. (Depends on just how complicated they are! LOL)

Here's some pics. It's kinda bulky but it's from the 60's. It has a spring loaded tensioner.

Re: A/C compressor conversion

I've decided I am going to start looking at compressor options. I was reading an article about using a non-York compressor and adding a tool oiler. I think I will see what I can find to mount on the drivers side that is small enough to deal with.

Re: A/C compressor conversion

I meant something other than a York to mount on the driver side. I will go to the yard and find something to pull and convert. I'm thinking a stock GM compressor with all the brackets, pullies and stuff.

The york is a good option, but looks awful. No matter how you mount it or set it up, it looks out of place (that's why I tossed it in the first place).
