Camaro front clip bag options?

I have a 1970 Camaro front clip under my '55 Chevy truck, and I want to install airbags, but I need to know what options I have available. I have called Air Ride, and they have a Cool Ride kit, but it's $549. I think I can do it cheaper, as I have the fab skills to do all the fabrication work myself. Does anybody make just the cups for this application? I figure a #2500 bag should suffice.

Re: Camaro front clip bag options?

I would use Firestone F6957's.

I would go with the Shockwave... I know you don't want to spend the money, but trust me when I say it is well worth the time, energy, and clearance issues a bag will give (not necessarily the bag, but the shock you have to relocate). Take the 10 hrs of work a shockwave will save you and use your fab skills during those 10 hrs. to do some side jobs or something and make the money that the Shockwave costs.

Re: Camaro front clip bag options?

How would you mount them? Weld tabs to the lower control arm, and bring it through the existing spring land (cutting it away) in the subframe and make an upper shock mount? Would the end-to-end length be such that I would have a tall upper shock mount, or can it be housed within the space that the coil originally rode in? I love the idea of a Shockwave, but was wondering how much I would be cutting away to make it fit.

Re: Camaro front clip bag options?

I just went on Air Ride's website and see that the version 3.0 Shockwave will bolt in to my subframe. I'll hook up with you when I'm ready to order them. I really like the fact that you can order them with the stud instead of the eyelet on the top.

Re: Camaro front clip bag options?

Go over to the 47-59 message site and check out Cal 58 GMC's project truck. He has a bunch of pic with his camaro sub frame and shock-waves that he installed.

It is a direct bolt-in like you mentioned, and it makes it very easy. You will have to trim a little out of the spring pocket on the sub-frame for bag clearances. There are two deifferent upper mounting stud heights available for this application, one is an inch taller (or shorter... depending on how you look at it )

So which is it? Taller or shorter? See the kind of info you get around here.

Re: Camaro front clip bag options?

I set the Camaro clip up to where the truck would be low even without drop spindles, so would you suggest being safe and getting the longer version? And thanks entourageguy, I have followed Cal 58's truck for awhile now, and I totally forgot that he had Shockwaves. I love the internet!

I would definitely go with the taller one (the one inch deifference is in the height of the upper mounting stud). The top mounting stud unscrews from the shockwave, and can be replaced with the shorter one if it sits too high for you.
