Is the 4.3 any good with a big truck?

The 4.3L is a VERY reliable engine, It will be fine if you dont do any towing. Keep in mind they dont get any better mileage than a 4.8L

The truck is overpriced in my opinion being a base model regular cab.

I've got a 99' automatic with the 4.3. Wished I would've looked for a manual. Makes a big difference in mileage. Motors are solid. I agree that it's overpriced. I bought mine in 04 in mint condition for 5k.

What year did the 4.8 L motor come in?

I hear the 5.3 is good on gas too? Which is better?

The 5.3 is generally the same on gas mileage (maybe even slightly better) plus you get the added torque.

I would go with a 5.3 over the 4.8.

We had a 04 gmc with a 5.3 an that was a good truck. It was a 4x4 an averaged 15 driving it nice but when the emission sensor got dirty and engine light came on it went down to 12 to 13. We put it through a lot with hauling heavy trailers and South Dakota winters an still ran great when we sold it. If your going to pull trailers make sure you get a bigger motor.
