Tools for cutting bolts

hey guys, just wondering what you guys use for cutting off bolts when they are rusted solid. I used my 4.5" Angle grinder with a cutting wheel to get my U bolts off the rear that were stuck, and went thru 2 blades. I was leery of using the sawzall with the metal blade just because I was worried about hitting the axle tube.

I have a decent Craftsman 4.5 angle grinder and used some standard ACE blades, not sure what brand. They worked but got eaten up pretty quick, but did the job. next up is the cab to frame bolts!

Get some better cut off wheels for your angle grinder. The dewalt ones last longer, I could make short work of some u-bolts for sure.

Re: Tools for cutting bolts

get an air chisel, with the V grove bit and keep it sharp, makes quick work of stuborn things, even better if you drill a hole through or part way into it, smaller bites shear quicker.

Re: Tools for cutting bolts

Well I don't have an air compressor, but I will try some different cutting wheels. I haven't tried to move the cab bolts yet, that's for monday's fun. I'll try and unbolt them first, but if that doesn't work... I'll be cutting!

Thanks guys.

Re: Tools for cutting bolts

if your having trouble breaking the thin ones, grab a metal griding wheel, they will cut through, just a wider cut.

Depends on location, but oxy/acetylene torch is my favourite so far. With a smaller torch it can reach into places grinders can't.

Times (2) on this tip. I have used a flex-head breaker bar in the past to carry out this task

No air?, I understand /been there

There is always the ol’ stand-by, don’t underrate a sharp chisel & a good ball peen hammer.

Back in the old days before all the new innovative tools hit the shelves allot of things were built and or modified using a good hammer and a sharp punch & chisel set
