Vortec 350 is anybody running one?

New to the forum great site. Just bought a southern 1968 GMC 2500. Though it's been in wisconsin for a decade it's solid. Ok now for details, custom camper, 3 tanks, 351 6 cyl, turbo 400, factory air. split bench seat. I know the 351 won't cut it how about a vortec 350 will it work? THANKS IN ADVANCE. MARK. Ps this is my first restoration.

Re: Vortec 350 is anybody running one?

I just installed $1940 to the driveway 4 bolt new chevy vortec engine in 99 k1500. It is a sweet running engine. My only complaint is: why the heck is that dang distributor stabbed in the rear; need to be Plastic Man to adjust it

Hello Blackmaxx, welcome to the board.
See my 68 c10 build for Vortec swap information, I'm not quite done with the engine swap yet but there is more than enough information there to help you make a decision, there are also many other builds on here with Vortec swaps that are informative and can help you avoid pitfalls while doing the swap.

Re: Vortec 350 is anybody running one?

The vortec should bolt right up. I'm running a 71 350 with vortec heads. The block is essentially the same. Just different heads with different angles and a better flow.

Re: Vortec 350 is anybody running one?

If we are talking about the 96-98 vortec engines, It all bolts in the same but will have the same issues as newer EFI swaps like the LS guys. You will need to eliminate the catalytic converters, Have a custom tune including disabling the rear O2 sensors, disabling the VATS (vehicle anti theft system). I guess you could keep the cats and rear O2 if you wanted. You will need to either buy a high dollar harness or if you have a complete donor vehicle use the existing harnesses and eliminate 100? unnecessary wires.

You can find wiring diagrams on lt1swap.com, and if you create a free account on autozone.com, also alldata.com (pay site)

There are 3 active members using this drivetrain:
myself
Harpie
JohnT71

I have seen several others but not active members and dont remember their names or thread.

only JohnT71 is actually "running" and here is a snip from his thread.

I will try to answer any questions, and JohnT71 is a helpful guy also if you want to ask him since he is actually driving his

The 5.7L is slightly different than the 5.3L and a lot harder to find because it's even older and was in high demand for swaps for many years, it would be a lot easier to find a 2000-present 5.3L Vortec.

If your truck Isn't an all numbers matching truck with all GM sheet metal then it won't reduce the value at all but keep in mind these aren't high dollar potential collectables in the first place even if they are all numbers matching, all the money is in the restomod market with these trucks.

Re: Vortec 350 is anybody running one?

Programming can be done by many local tuners, which are popping up everywhere. There are also several mail order "tuners" Mail your ECM to them and tell them what needs done and they will mail it back. LT1 swap charges $75 according to their website, Street and performance is another big mail order tuner. http://www.hotrodlane.cc/
