How are you guys using a engine hoist to lift the cab?
 

So last night we took the cab off my truck. We are moving it to another frame with all of the interior still in it. So its HEAVY. It took 4 of us and it was still a PITA. how are you guys using the engine lifts to pick the cabs up?

I used a 4x4 after I made a holder for it that bolted onto my hoist.

It works great. I also made one of the bed/cab lifts that rockrln sells plans for. I sold it and figured I wouldn't use it that much. I've used the 4x4 a lot since then.I will probably make another bed/cab lift one day. Its much easier to use if your by yourself as I am a lot of the time.

Build the version that Rokcrln sells.
$20 for the plans.
They work great and no worries of anything slipping.

How did you attach it to the 4x4?

That plan from Rok would be awesome but I am only going to use it once so its really not worth me buying the plan, materials, building it then having it laying around forever.

I was lucky and used our two post lift and was able to lift the complete cab and complete front clip. Worked perfect, just put the lifting arms under the cab supports

you need a few young bucks is all!!!!!!!!!!! unless you are doing a lot of trucks there is no need to fabricate anything. Of course unless you like making things!!
we have the lifts etc. but it easier to just lift it off with some help.everyone seems to want to come up with some kind of contraption. I have used 2x4 with a lift. cheap and dirty. cut some slots for the pinch welds at the door, duct tape it down. and position it and lift it.hahahaha

Built a rokcrln lift, works great, lifts bed too. Actually farm it out to my buddies body shop quite a bit.

I did not take any pictures, but the last time I did mine with a couple nylon tow straps UNDER the cab between the frame. My doors were not on the truck so it made it easier. The front strap was located down where the rocker hole for the front fender mount is; rear was under the rocker panel. One person can pump and stabilize the rig, but two makes it easier.

Low budget but it works. used 2x10 and 2x4's. I think that 2x8 would work also. screw them together for strength.

One of my buddies was saying we could use the bolt holes for the seats and hook chains to them. That a good idea?

Brian, yes I have seen this done. It helps to have one of the engine tilt things too to even out the load (keep the cab from tilting one side to the other) where lifting from the top with the cherry picker 'push' type lift would allow the cab to find it's own center of balance. With chains 'lifting' instead of 'pushing' it up you kinda have some sway involved too.

I'm about to take my cab off too and I think I'm going to make one of the type above. 4x4 or metal under the cab roof pushing up. ..

thats good to know.... Just so happens I bought one of those engine leveling hoist to put my motor in the other frame. I just might try that route.

Lifting with chains sounds good. Also note that the one that I made with wood will lift with the doors on. I suppose that would work with chains as well. Sounds like trial and effort to see what works best. The reason I used 2x12 is that I had them in the wood pile! I have also lifted boxes with the 2x12's by laying flat under the bed side lip just in front of the middle stake pocket and wraping a chain around them. worked well.
