1955 gmc

I bought this 55 in February this year. I've never done a project like this before and this site has been an inspiration to me. I hope i can figure the picture thing out, Im not the sharpest with a computer. Be patient. My plan is to shorten the frame, Camaro sub, etc. Let the adventure begin

Re: 1955 gmc

After the tear down i cut the frame, shortened it, and rewelded. Kinda scary to cut it off not really knowing what or how to do it, thankful for the internet!! After way too much measuring it turned out great

Re: 1955 gmc

Next was the 79 Camaro subframe. This site sure was a help with this part. It took my neighbor and a lot of beer to get it figured out, cut, measured square and welded in but the end result was awesome! I couldnt be happier with the results so far. I have a limited knowledge of this type of work and it has been very rewarding so far

Re: 1955 gmc

Next project was to fit the 9 inch rearend, 4 link, QA1 coilovers, modifying the camaro crossmember, and the new aluminum fuel cell. I had to move the fill hole because of the bed crossmember. After a final going over to make sure I didnt miss any welds it was off to the sandblaster and then the paint booth. I didnt want overspray all over my shop so i employed a friend that restores tractors to get the job done. He did an awesome job at a very reasonable price, Thanks Daryl!!

Nice project, love the GMC Grill too! What are your plans for the exterior, hopefully you'll just rub it out and leave the patina!

Re: 1955 gmc

Thanks ChuckDriver, If i had it to do over that is what i would do, but ive already had the box blasted and primed, so im in for some type of repaint. I need to tub the wheel wells to accomodate the tires, plus i opted to shorten my longbox istead of trying to find a different one

Nice project to start with. I wish my 3200 bed was in that great of shape. It is hard to find the long beds. Good luck with your build. You are already farther along than I am.

Re: 1955 gmc

the worst part of this is the replacement panels fit like crap! I send more time altering the panels. So far its been very rewarding and very expensive!! lol Thanks to all who have posted here before me!!!

Re: 1955 gmc

Im learning a lot about sheet metal, most by the mistakes I've made. I did send the door to a body shop to repair them. The information on this site and the photos of others builds have given me a whole new respect for anyone that tackles a project like this. The level of skill and craftsmanship is amazing!!

Re: 1955 gmc

just a few more photos to show where I am to date. These fenders were a mess in my opinion but I've got them back in shape. Its a good thing my time isn't worth much because I have a ton of work in them, but I'm getting a good education
