Has anyone converted their barn door sliding/lock mechanisms to gas struts?
Somebody give me a link to a build thread or details of how you did it. I hate these hinges... or whatever you call the sliding/lock mechanisms.

There have been a few projects doing this, but Frizzlefry's project sticks out as one that has done it.

Yeah, he was who I thought first when I started the thread, but his is the clamshell style. However, I LOVE what he did to his, but I was hoping someone had done it to barn doors. I have been looking at potential mount points. I am someone might have already worked through the "engineering process"

Re: Has anyone converted their barn door sliding/lock mechanisms to gas struts?
I did it on my barn doors. Just mounted the shock brackets where the original slides mounted up. Seemed like the strongest point. Quick and easy. I'll see if I can get a pic for you this weekend. Converted my hood to gas struts as well.

Awesome. I'd love to see a pic. If you can get a part # off of the shocks too (or even if you know what vehicle they were originally intended for), that would be helpful. And where did you get the ball studs that screw into the body?

Re: Has anyone converted their barn door sliding/lock mechanisms to gas struts?
Well, stay tuned... I've had a couple Rock Auto gift certificates just waiting to get used so I measured everything up and I ordered two gas struts today to start the project.
I'll take pics!

Re: Has anyone converted their barn door sliding/lock mechanisms to gas struts?
Have thought about doing same.My first thing is to get rid of the big ugly hinges. Was looking at the motorized opener on my dads pacifica today wondering if anyway to make that or simular deal work on panel. Would have two either have two or somway of making second one delay opening and theh begin closing first.Lot of stuf to making it work with two doors but would be cool as hell.

Re: Has anyone converted their barn door sliding/lock mechanisms to gas struts?
I just got my gas shocks today from Rock Auto. Tried to find the ball studs at Advance Auto... No luck. If I can't find them locally, I will be ordering them from a website mentioned in a thread on here. I am pretty excited to not have that door slamming on me on windy days.

Re: Has anyone converted their barn door sliding/lock mechanisms to gas struts?
Jeff....I think the ball studs used in 67-68 gas pedals could work....I saw member Hart_Rod use them in his burb build....he had clam shell doors but they worked in the the holes back there....check his build thread

I did this today. Threw together a "how to" thread. Thought I would share...
