67 burban question

i have recently got a 67 suburban c20 the problem is i havent worked on a classic vehicle in a long time. the PO said he only had it 2 years and it just sat in his yard but as far as he knew it was all OE. i know for a fact it has 68 or 69 front fenders on by the side markers, it has a 283 sb in it but im pretty sure its not the original by the 4 barrel carb and HEI dist but can i tell what it from without pullin the motor. i apologize for the noob question but im just tryin to get back to my root since my family all had muscle cars, but any help would be appreciated thanks

Re: 67 burban question

Welcome to the forum, and congrats on your new ol' burb!

Can you take some pictures of your fenders, engine, and take down some of the numbers on the engine for us? We love pictures, especially of new forum members burbs!

basically take a bunch of pics of your burb, and all of us here will chime in at some point since we all love to help solve mysteries with trucks.

Just in case you do not know where to look for engine numbers, here is a picture that shows you where to look.

Re: 67 burban question

thanks for the welcome guys im goin to be workin on the burb today and i will take as many pics as i can. im super excited about the project like i said before i havent worked on a classic in a long time but now im almost 30 and the last classic car i had was a 67 dodge dart 270 with a mean slant six in it but after that i became a dad and needed an economical car so as bad as this is gonna sound i got into the honda scene real bad but now the time feels right for a big boy project. not really sure on the direction i wanna go yet, retro, rat, hot rod, or just what ever but i know this will be epic for me. so im off to work on the truck, will hopefully get pics up tonight. far warning tho i live in illinois so she isnt pretty right now but i see a dimond in the rough.
thanks again

Re: 67 burban question

Those fenders are 1968
The door panel is 71/72 I think.
The carb is an early Carter AFB - Older than 1967 I think.
The engine number you gave looks to me as the engine coming from Flint, and was made 5/24 but the GF I can't remember what that is.
I didn't see a road draft vent from the angle of the picture, so not sure how old the engine is from the pics. Can you take a pic of the front of the engine? If the harmonic balancer is thin little thicker than a half inch it will be a small journal, but if it is about an inch thick it will be a large journal. If it's a large journal it will be a newer engine such as a 327, 350, or 307.

Those are my thought's, and others will chime in eventually and add to this and or correct me.

Re: 67 burban question

WOW!! Cool burb man. The fifth number in the vin being a 7 would indicate a late 67. This is somewhat online with the front clip and the e-brake being a hand brake and the gauge cluster. The balancer could help identify if it is a 327+ or 283. The 283s I have run in the past are good motors just dont have crap for torque which is what gets this thing down the road. The locker sticker is interesting considering it is not on the SPID. It is kinda cool that you only have three listed items on the SPID ( I think so anyway ). It would appear this is a government vehicle based on the color and low SPID count.
Man I hope to find a nice suburban soon to build my family hauler. Good luck with this one.
Many many will share their thoughts and ideas on your project here.

I think it needs a BBC and 4/6 drop with a 700r4.

Re: 67 burban question

actually i want to keep the 283 in it. a friend of mine show me one online with a 327 crank some headwork and a certian cam which i cant think the copant who makes it but is spins 10 grand rpm all day, the s%its wicked and i want to put a tremec 5 speed in it those are the only for sure plans right now, i do want to drop it ive been lookin at maybe a vintage hotrod theme and i can get an offy intake for it that uses 6 individual carbs, i know tuning it will suck but i think the pay off will be epic

Re: 67 burban question

Sounds like you may have a vacuum leak.
Spray some carb cleaner around the intake manifold while the engine is running, and if the idle goes up then you have found your leak.

I just went through this on my '70, and found that my intake manifold gasket was leaking in two spots.

thanks jb cant wait to see yours going again.
i like the interior but there are a few things im gonna change like my very bare cluster may come up for sale mostly cuz as i start adding hp i want factory lookin gauges, and its deff gonna change the color cuz the PO spray painted it silver i like black. i am very much into the simplicity of like the 50s hot rod, and i do like rat rods but i dont wanna rat rod her out (1. she to pretty and 2. road and highways in central illinois suck) and i dont want it to simple, but also i dont want it to simple. i have tons of ideas for it like i not in love with the ginormagantuin rear side window but i love the look of the panels on here so i think im gonna try makin it a 3 door panel, and i i wanna do a wood slat truck bed in the rear section. i have also looked into a elcamino look but im not sure. and i just got a message and i might have the 8 lug disc swap i want for the front . stay tuned. also being on a very limited budget its gonna be a slow build, hence the name sloburban

Re: 67 burban question

well the C10 is a 1/2 ton not a 3/4 ton a C20 is a 3/4 ton with 8 lug 6 lug is 1/2 ton If you can look down on the drivers side frame its there is a bow in the frame for the 1968 power steering gear box then you have a late 67 witch is a plus I have a 1967 and i have the same frame as the 1964--66 chevy suburban If yours is a 3/4 ton you can find any day of the week a 3/4 ton disc brake front end easy now thye 1971--72 dis brake 1/2 ton front end a little harder this is my 1967 3 door

Re: 67 burban question

sorry guys its been a while, no real updates for 2 reasons, 1. it has been too cold to really do anything, 2. is because my daily driver seems to always come up with something wrong when i have the money to get parts, here it is a 94 Dakota sport 4x4

i bought this from my girlfriends dad last summer which he is the second owner and litterally everything that i havent replaced IS from 1994.
next on to what i have done. ok so i did have some questions about the engine and from pics i took,

i was pretty sure it was a 283, the i was actually able it transfer the engine code to a piece of paper with a piece of charcoal which verified it was a 283 built in 1967.....but not for my truck. still not sure what it came out of but at this point im ok with that, the only other thing i was able to get to before it got too cold was to start to adress my issues with the brakes i bought a new mc

and in the process of installing it i got to learn (teach myself) how to bend and make new brake lines

for my first time to ever do this i think i did pretty good and there are no leaks so check and check. now its warming up here i just want to fix the brakes at this point and at least drive it around the block. but so far im into this truck about $30. not bad since i traded a 2000 s10 4 banger with a blown engine that my father just gave to me for this truck.
