I love this mod, especially your ability to use wrecking yard parts and modify them to fit. That's right up my alley, and directly in my swim lane!

The Chevys of the '60s that had hidden headlights were always the coolest looking ones. This mod is going to be so cool when it's done. It'll have a factory look, and it'll blow people's minds.

The best part of having retractable lights is telling strangers it’s an extremely rare factory option that was only offered for one year! The responses will range all over the map from – you’re full of baloney - to - yes, my neighbor had one just like it! It can really add to the fun of ownership.

I am hoping so, but even more than that, I hope I am making it good enough to endure.
Would hate for it to all fall apart after a few hundred miles.....

You and I are in perfect tune on this Mark, and I am not surprised!!
I will be good fun.
If I am home in time this summer, I will have to take it to the Goodguys show, maybe drive it around the plaza a few times....

Yep, I will be loading a video of them soon....getting the cycle sweep figured out took a couple of weeks for me. I knew it was going to be a challenge, but the only way I could get it was to keep tinkering with it until I figured out the physics of it. Going back to the bone yard and getting photos of the original set up on the Honda I pulled them from helped a lot, made me wish I had thought to get the pics when I pulled the actuators.

Well guys it is -36* outside today, temps plumeted this week after dumping a few feet of snow on us. Makes it hard to get motivated to go down to the Frozen Garage.

But for you all, no sacrifice is too great.....
Thanks for looking, you pump me up !!!

Re: Not Another Rebuild Thread....

Waaaaaaay back in Jan 2012, after I had taken the hood valence panel off, and modified it with screens and stuff, I decided I wanted a GMC hood in the worst way.
But then I had no need for the Chevy hood valence I had just spent time on making cool....
Until I had the idea of putting it below my grill frame as an air dam.

Here is what that mock up looked like back then:
Name: 19jan12 (8).jpg
Views: 734
Size: 39.4 KB

Fast forward to 30 November 2013, and this is what I did with it; this is the pencil marking for the sculpting/fitting I wanted to achieve.
Name: 30nov13 air dam mod (1).jpg
Views: 744
Size: 37.7 KB

A little bit of cutting and bending later:
Name: 30nov13 air dam mod (3).jpg
Views: 745
Size: 42.0 KB

Some amature welding and primer; and you will take note of the gap above the turn signal wells. This was closed with a small patch panel I welded in there.
Name: 30nov13 air dam mod (4).jpg
Views: 748
Size: 40.0 KB

I will get more photos up soon of the fog lights that were mounted behind those turn signal wells, and the air horns that I mounted in the center.
Name: 30nov13 air dam mod II (1).jpg
Views: 722
Size: 35.3 KB

Thanks for looking guys (and gals if any...) !!!!

Re: Not Another Rebuild Thread....

Hey guys,
We are nearing the completion of all my "Face" mods so you are going to see how all this came together.
Back in post #1306 I mentioned how I had set up the grill with its ability to have its attitude adjusted as needed on both ends. It is the expectation, with it being soild mounted at center, to be able to adjust height and twist to match the headlight doors on either end. I used nylon expansion nuts, body trim screws, and vacuum hose to supply back pressure for the grill that would be adjustable. Here are the photos of its final test mounting, being controled from the headlight switch:
Name: 24dec13 face (1).jpg
Views: 796
Size: 53.2 KB
Name: 24dec13 face (2).jpg
Views: 788
Size: 59.3 KB

Here you can see the fog lights mounted behind the screens below the headlights. They still have masking tape across them in this photo, but you get the idea:
Name: 26dec13 face (3).jpg
Views: 780
Size: 52.5 KB

I did end up intalling the full sets of strip LEDs behind the cutout letters.
With camera flash:
Name: 26dec13 face (4).jpg
Views: 790
Size: 52.4 KB

Without camera flash:
Name: 26dec13 face (5).jpg
Views: 6543
Size: 40.3 KB

I laid down first passes of grey in the beauty trim around the grill support last night. I will finish that off today. I plan on getting photos of the horns and fog lights, do the final mount of the grill, the head light doors, air horn compressor, and shoot some photos and vids.
So if this mod has gotten your attention, please stay tuned....

It's looking even better as it comes together! I remember back a bunch of pages when you had that hood section under the bumper and I was like "eeehh... looks like a hood section under the bumper" BUT you've pulled it off man! Nobody will recognize it until you point it out and that's gonna be cool! Stoke the fire - gotta be freeeeeezing ur azz off up there!

That is just too cool. It looks like a rolled pan, but also looks somewhat stock as well. I like where you're going with this front end styling. It's original original and good looking. I also like the grille illumination. I was considering a tube grille illuminated at both ends and made of acrylic rod, but the floating Buick grilled bar cancelled the project.

Glad you like it Don, I think of you a lot this weekend as I am revisiting my hood right now.

**************************************************************************************

Well... alrighty then.
Note to self, that blue painters tape sucks when you are in nice weather, and sucks even more when you are in sub-zero weather !!
I attempted to correct a masking misalignment today which should have been an easy peasy quick fix....
Now due to the Blue Masking Tape not cooperating, I have to fix the fix...tomorrow.
Then I will put the "face" all back together and shoot all the visual stuff I promised you guys this morning.

In the mean time here are the photos of the Air Horns and Fog Lights mounted I also promised. The Air Horn compressor is going to be mounted on the radiator support in the location where the stock voltage regulator would normally go. (yes something else I did not get to today....)

Heh, they were on sale at O'Reillys and would be more formidible than the stock ones....

*******************************************************************************************

Ok let me snivel here for a moment, and say; today was one of those days that nothing would go right the first time.
It amazes me that simple things like head light adjustment screws can pop off so easy, but be such a PITA to get back on.....those alone took up a substantial amount of my day, much to my dismay and well.... you get the idea....

At the end of it all, I got the horn all wired in, and the face reassembled.
I present these humble photos as proof of my meager progress>

As your discerning eye will note, I still have some adjusting to accomplish to get it to align as it was on the table, but I think with some patience (of which I am all out of today) and some fiddling with it, I will get the desired effect.
I have 24 hour duty tomorrow, and it still being the holidays, if things are slow enough, I will make the video I been promising you all !!

Time to eat some delectable home made pizza from my lovely wife, and make a dent in my beer stock !!

CHEERS !!!!
