Here's some history of the fremont plant. GM and TOYOTA joint venture from 1984 to 2010. Now produces the Tesla electric electric auto.

Re: Z code / Fremont, CA Assembly Plant
It's too bad there aren't any photos of the empty Fremont parking lot on Saturday mornings: There were so many beer cans and bottles left out there from the Friday shift you could barely walk through it. Good old days.

Re: Z code / Fremont, CA Assembly Plant
Do you have any you Fremont built truck guys have unique chalk marks under the hood that indicate a specific inspector or?
I was wondering about that because I do have a rather odd chalk mark on mine that I think was made to indicate the inspector. Coley ![]()

Re: Z code / Fremont, CA Assembly Plant
Coley, Here are a couple of threads that will shed some light. Most if not all trucks and cars had these grease pencil marks on them when they left the factory.

Re: Z code / Fremont, CA Assembly Plant
For the first year full year of truck production in 1964, Fremont was H code. Went to Z code for 1965 and later trucks. Funny, I spend time on the 60-66 forums, but I have never seen anyone post a photo a stock base model '64 panel like the photo in the link (photo of green panel with olds and buick). Thanks agian SS Tim for history lesson.

Re: Z code / Fremont, CA Assembly Plant
Chevy built trucks at Van Nuys until sometime around 1962. I have a friend with a '55 second series, and it was built at Van Nuys. Van Nuys built Chevy trucks only, but when Fremont opened, it built Chevy's and GMC's. My '67 is a Fremont truck. Van Nuys was a Chevrolet plant, Fremont was B-O-P (Buick, Olds, Pontiac), even though a lot of Chevy A-bodies were built there. That was before GMAD!

Re: Z code / Fremont, CA Assembly Plant
Notice how big the spaces were back then? Boy,they sure shrunk those down since back then. No wonder so many door dings!

Re: Z code / Fremont, CA Assembly Plant
I was noticing the same thing. They look to be 1 1/2 times bigger back then.

I have been to the Fremont plant on a number of times and it really is quite impressive. Question is: is there anybody on this site who worked Fremont from 67-72? If not then I'm thinking about trying to go through the heritage site to see if they'll give up some names??? I doubt it privacy and all but... BTW thats 600 trucks in a 24 hour day, 218,400 trucks a year... enjoy the pics because all that farm land is now concrete... cheers Nim

Re: Z code / Fremont, CA Assembly Plant
My 72 was built there as well. Got to go on a tour of the facility recently and see Tesla's being built.....pretty incredible. Tesla is only using a fraction of the facility.
