Is something missing? Steering column

Let me preface this with I AM A MECHANICAL NEWBIE lol.

I wanted to learn how to work on something so I bought this cool old 1970 c10. I feel like there's something missing from my steering column, I can reach under the hood and shake it around. Also I can pull back on the steering wheel about an inch. Here's a pic

Re: Is something missing? Steering column

The lower bearing is worn out. It is available from a few sources though. The large spring and flat washer preload the bearing and take care of the slack in the shaft.

Looks like your spring might be broken also.
