Doohickey fell out of ignition cylinder lock - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Can you help me temp fix my ignition cylinder lock? I had sudden failure of the lock, I couldn't turn the key without doing some serious wiggling. So I removed it to have a look. I suppose I need a new cylinder, but I can't get one today. The cylinder has a little bar that moves up and down depending on whether the key is in it, and I suppose that's what makes it lock. The bar has 2 doohickeys, one on each end. You can see in this picture it appears 1 has fallen out. What holds that in place? Is it just pressed in, or do I need to do something to make it fit and stay?

That's a tumbler from the lock. I'm turning the summins light for lock doc....he'll be able to tell you if it's fixable or not.

Ignition lock tumbler and I don't believe it is repairable.

Yeah, just pick up a new key assy. It's when the thing-a-ma jigs falls out, that's when you have to worry.

I have fixed them. The spring retainer is just crimped in. You can try to put it back in place and re-stake it, but you will need to turn the spring upright first. It is laying on it's side.

If that doesn't work and you need to drive the truck you can remove the spring retainer from the other side, remove the bar, and re-install the lock cylinder,(it will no longer lock) or just just operate the switch with a screwdriver.

Thanks. I turned that spring upright and put the retainer back and staked it. It seems to be holding. You're the guy to talk to about buying new cylinders for the doors and ignition with matching keys, right?

Good deal on the repair. You might want to put a little JB weld on the ends of the retainer too.

Yes, I have a few of the OEM sets.
