Working on my 64 Hawk . Doing brake cylinders and master . But thought you would like to see my work area. 63 Avanti 60 Tbird convertible and 71 mustang convertible. Got to get the slots redone. And new tires on the mustang

Brakes are working but one rear is weeping . But this is all original 30k miles on her

Nice!! (I've always had a soft spot for Studebakers.) I'd love to have a place like that... and a small collection to work on... and the energy & talent to make some progress on 'em!

Looks good. I see you have a wood floor. My garage has a wood floor too. Sure is nice to kneel down on when it's cold out. Doesn't sweat either.....

Basically it's a pole barn . Then we laid out a grid of4x4 . Filled in with item 4 tempt it . 6 mill vapor barrior then exterior plywood . He's been down 22 years

This is interesting to me Mark. It sounds like a cheap way for a decent work surface. Is the vapor barrier directly between the plywood and dirt? What was the purpose of the grid? I’ve got a pole barn that would be much more useful without a dirt floor. Any info would be appreciated.

The grid is to nail the plywood to. Basically a bunch of 4x8 boxes .The barrier is over the item 4 directly under the plywood. Did it this way because if we did concrete the taxes would have been a lot more. Pole barns are considered temporary but once there's a concrete floor it's now permanent. All we did for the lift was put 2x3 or so 1/2 inch plate steel for pads its viasable in the mustang pictureNothing moves and you can use a floor Jack on it too with a plate so the wheels don't go into the wood.

Problem is small collections get bigger. I feel like all I do is work on them just to maintain them . Gave up on buying batteries for all of them i just move 2 batteries around.


Last count 11 old cars one the 68 stepper not drivable. Well i could drive it with no bed on it.

Thanks for that! Currently my pole barn is only valued at 500 bucks on my property tax appraisal. I would really like to keep it that way! I have to say I think it would be pretty neat to have a wood floor, It'd make me feel all nostalgic everytime I walked in.

Old bank barns had wood upper floors and they'd put tractors, wagon loads of hay, and all sorts of tonnage on them. Sure, those had massive materials, but on the ground using pressure treated timbers is solid as can be. Many an old repair shop back in the day had wooden floors. In fact, none had concrete at first. here the slab is no issue on taxes since it's out of sight/out of mind and inspections are all exterior. Never heard of anyone upcharged on taxes. I just like the cozy feeling of a shop like this, for a refuge

It's really nice to have but there are a couple of issues . Where I used to live I was about 20 minutes from my mom's place where the barn is. Now I'm about an hour and 20 minutes. Second is the barn wasnt designed to have a lift so the rafters are to low. So you can't get the full highth of the lift. Was ok for my dad me I have to crouch under the car.

The house i rent out where I used to live I did make the ceiling high enough for a lift in my detached garage. That's where my AMX and Chevelle are stored. When I eventually sell that house I'll build my dream work shop here in Napanoch. My daughter lives in my house and isn't in a position to buy it at this time.

I noticed the ceiling height. But I just don't like a high ceiling and vast air space like how people build shops. I figure when I build a shop, at my next place, I will keep the ceiling lower but frame the area where the lift goes higher. I know people with attached garages with a lift inside and you'd never know it.

I don't have any pictures from the street, but this is a friend's rancher in a neighborhood I did chimney flashing on. In the background you can see where his three car garage roof pops up a little for the lift. He retired from trucking and now does mechanical work for hire out of his house

I had an engineer look at the trusses and he did a drawing of what i would need to do to get the room i need . It would only be 4 i need to modify. But I'm not doing it reason is my mom is 85 and i don't know how much longer she will be able to live there on her own. As of now she is very active and in good health thank god

Yep, gotta weigh these things out. I'm glad to hear your mom is doing well independently. It's the same with my mom at 89. But time itself is the reality here, along with you never know when things can turn. I know people in their 90s still going strong, driving and rowing out to the sail boat for an afternoon of sailing. That guy doesn't skip a beat, steady sea legs, push mower, carrying ladders, etc. You get the feeling he's going to last forever, but that just doesn't happen. At least you have a lift you can sit on a rolling stool under your vehicle with, or even bring up all fours to roll under on a creeper w/o concern.
