Re: 56 shop truck build

The videos of it running in the shop was shot on my IPad and the one of it driving was taken on an IPhone 4S it feels really good to be able to drive this thing. It sat dead since 1985

Re: 56 shop truck build

I was nervous but curious at the same time. The whole time was spent listening to rattles, squeaks, thinking about the front tire alignment, how it handles, how it steers and most importantly checking the brakes often. The next 5 days I am on holidays to work on the truck and load it on a trailer to drive 600kms to participate in Cruise Weekend in Saskatoon. We are rapidly working the bugs out

Congrats to Team Dubie!

How does it drive compared to how you thought it would drive? So happy for you to have it on the road, enjoy your holidays and especially the Cruise!

Re: 56 shop truck build

I will admit that after the first ride, I was les than impressed with the ride. But there were ok contributing factors to that. We didn't have the door seals installed, the inner fender bolt wasn't installed and the bed was missing the 2 middle supports and the floor so it was just one big rattle trap. But after taking it out for multiple short cruises, we bought it back to the shop and have been having down every single one of them. Now that its all ugh tenting up, I'm rather enjoying the ride. I wasn't sure what to expect because this is my first solid axle truck, but I like the nostalgic feel to it. And I love how easy it is to steer, even with no power steering. But I do need to replace the giant factory steering wheel

Re: 56 shop truck build

What are your thought on the 2 speed Ford Taurus fan? I have them in both my 53 & 59. I couldn't be happier with them. They can be wired to come on at low speed. Then if needed wired to run at high till the temps drop via a switch. I've used the in the past with other v8 projects and have always been happy with them. They pull a lot of air.

Re: 56 shop truck build

I installed a 2 speed fan but wired the high fan speed to the accessory so it runs on highall the time that the key is on.,its been running a little on the warm side during the engine break in period.

A few shots from yesterday. Got the bumper stripped off the 58, stripped it to bare metal and gave it 3 good coats of satin white. I also put in a make shift
Bed wood floor to tie everything together and hold the bed in place. This is just a platform for what we will be using on the floor
Today will be adjusting the toe in on the front tires and going through the entire front end to check for loose bolts and nuts now that this thing has been moving and vibrating.mi also fabbed a rear bumper up from a piece of 2x4 steel and some plate, got it painted and will hand it this morning

Re: 56 shop truck build

well we just got back from Cruise Weekend in Saskatoon where this old Dirtbag pickup made it's first public appearance in almost 30 years. it was a hit, especially with all the little kids calling it "Mater" all damn weekend. I really need to get the blue paint on this thing so it doesn't look like that damn town truck.hahahah

We took part in the big Cruise night on Saturday and put it in the 900+ entry car show yesterday. We didn't get home until midnight and then were up a few hours later to go back to work.

Stupid kids. Don't they know Mater is an International Harvester?
(OK, so he doesn't LOOK like an IH, but that's what he was supposedly based on)

this truck gets called Mater ALL the time by kids and adults alike. I can see some similarities for sure. I can hardly wait to paint it

Great that you made it to a cruise. Your truck looks awesome. Can't wait till I get to that point. It will probably be a couple more years.

Re: 56 shop truck build

it was a good time and was great to be able to drive the truck all weekend long at such a big event. There are a couple small things we need to address now that we're back at home so we'll deal with those and hopefully have the truck back up and rolling by the weekend

Beefing up then notch today. Got all the plate cut yesterday so the father in law, who's a retired boilermaker, can come by this morning and wld it all up solid. We hope to be cruising again tomorrow

Re: 56 shop truck build

It's all done, welded up and painted. So today's job will be to put the rear shocks back on, mount the rims, mount the bed and hook up the tail lights

Re: 56 shop truck build

After putting the truck back together yesterday, I had a brake adjustment to take care of. After that was done it was time or a road test. I honestly can believe the difference in the ride now that the frame is properly supported. It rides like a whole different truck. The temperature was staying down, the brakes were operating great and then it happened. Fifty feet away from my shop and the rad blows a hole in one of the cores. Just when I was going to pick up the wife to go cruise for some ice cream. Oh well, just one of those things right? I will be back up and on the road in a couple days

Sorry to hear about the rad. It looked like it was in great shape. Any idea what may have caused it to blow?

Re: 56 shop truck build

oh this isn't the rad you sent me bud, this was a re-cored one I picked up from a guy in our car club from his 65 Chevelle. Once I mounted the one from you, it sat pretty high and didn't look like it would get much air coming though it. So I put it aside and ran this one. This rad was re-cored about 18 years ago but never actually used. I had it pressure tested before using it but I have a feeling it was a combination of heat and pressure that found a weak spot
