Re: 72 k20 project

hopefully soon. i have a friend that may be coming up from the PHX area in the next few weeks. if possible i am going to try to have him bring up the metal. there is a retailer there with good pricing on goodmark parts, and to save the shipping would be nice. probably going to do a new floor also

Re: 72 k20 project

I test fit the pan again, now that it is complete. everything cleared with room to spare! i ordered a handful of weld bungs and some other stuff the other day, but the bungs were delayed. but it looks like it can be welded up and add the bungs when its all done.

I am easing myself into the idea of the new sheet metal. probably buy it after i get back from the north country next week. that will be excitingto have a bed almost ready for paint.

Go ahead and build a pair of wheelie bars for this beast! Don't forget the chute mount either.

No kidding, right? all this fancy pants on an overdressed old cattle chasin, seed bean haulin, cornpatch farm truck. haha

i did get a couple boxes of stuff.

i sold some parts to a buddy a while back(somehow i keep brokering round pattern 205s) and just had him credit my account at his shop. the other day i compiled a relatively short list of stuff that quickly blew my credit.... dang.

I also got a box from my good pal, McMaster Carr. Hopefully this is enough braided wire loom for the truck. i picked up some hardware as well. i have boxes of new hardware stashed for the re-assembly process. i got a few rolls of the good electrical tape.as well.

Re: 72 k20 project

there are two rolls of PTFE line and 8 or 10 hose ends. all the fuel will be PTFE. the rubber liner hose is for the air system. i would be stoked to do it all in PTFE, but that double the cost part means i make some sacrifice. that mediocre little pile of stuff had an alarming price tag as it is.

Re: 72 k20 project

But, all has not been leisure. i did get some stuff worked on in the last few days.

got some weld bungs and made a pick up tube.

then i welded the crap out of it.

the pick up tube on the inside. the transition area between the sump and front portion was also leveled off. not very pretty, but i bet no one notices.

i laid out and drilled the pilot holes for the turbo drains. i ordered another set of bungs and that should be here monday. as soon as i figure out what i am doing to the front sump and weld in all the bushings its nearly done.

I have ordered a few mandrels bends to get the inlet on the block to jive. they will also be here monday.

Very nice work on the oil pan! How was the rapids trip during the flip and after? That definitely looked like a blast!

The float was a blast. the flip too. pretty exciting. then we drove up the road to the actual town(if it can be called that) of Hope and had one of the best cheeseburgers ive had in a while. with bacon. i recommend the Seaview Cafe to anyone who is on the south side of the Turnagain arm for whatever reason

Re: 72 k20 project

i spent most of saturdays productive hours doing some rather well procrastinated regular maintenance on my old green manwagon. it took longer than expected but whatever, i had no real goals for the day other than that anyhow.

sunday was scheduled for a trip up the hill.

we ran over Bolum pass to Rico, CO. then ate a cheesburger in Rico and hauled back over the hill on Scotch Creek. a fun sunday.

then... dammit. half way up scotch the clutch takes a complete dump. it will not release, so at least i was able to run it over with a bit of grinding and clutchless shifting. Jeez.

ordered the clutch on Rockauto and started the tear down.

but i must carry on with my chevy project. i recieved a package of bungs and welded on a few more.

the last items were on my doorstep tonight, so hopefully tomorrow it can have a viable pick up.

Why do hose for a pick up rather than hardline? Options for later?

Re: 72 k20 project

Its easier to route, and much less time consuming. i put a small effort into trying to see if i could have a hard tube mandrel bent, but kept hearing sure, but we do orders of 100. i didnt want to piece it together with individual prefabbed bends. it would have looked like hell, and the CL radius was pretty big on the bends.

Re: 72 k20 project

i think all of the bungs are in. you can see the -6 oring port installed at the end of the pick up in the sump. i think i will run a line to the front sump area and let the pick up suck some of the oil back down. hopefully help clear that sump from all the oil of the front drive and no.1 cylinder. the bung in the front was placed so that the crank will be 'throwing' the oil at it as well. here's hoping.

this is the additional -10 oring bung i installed. i am thinking about putting an oil temp gauge in the pan. if not, it is easy to plug.

in that first pic, you can see the pick up. after the stewing and hand ringing and whatnot, i decided just to stub it out far enough to tighten the bolts. i can make a much tighter turn with the hose end. so, i have a couple pieces of mandrel bent 1" laying around now.

i know, i have made better welds. i am arguing with a bottle of sketchy argon, and rather than wait it out, i welded it so the darn thing gets done.

i also managed to get the NV4500 and 205 out of the jeep. tomorrow i will get the flywheel out and hauled to the machine shop.

Sick. Completely, totally, thoroughly, sick. Going to be full-on disturbing once all of the lines get hooked up to it. Too bad it has to get painted pink.....

I thought the yellow Suburban had gotten sold??

Re: 72 k20 project

Thanks! i decided to run the red and blue ends on these hoses, since they contrast so well with the aluminum. should look pretty cool.

the burb did get sold years ago. the guy who bought it lives close and is a buddy. he joined us for the trip. the black pre-runner next to the burb is what drew built after the burb went down the road.

Re: 72 k20 project

Thanks!

the river trip was in Alaska, i was up there for a bit a little over a week ago. we have a pretty decent river in town for rafting, but the water levels vary so much through the seasons that sometimes its a riot, and others it is just a inner tube float type of deal. the water levels up in the north country are a little more consistent, and Sixmile creek is class 4-5. the lower Animas here is at best a 4. still need to tackle the upper Animas. it is a bit zestier.

the off roading was here in SW Co. we have miles and miles of old forest service trails to piddle around on. i wish i took the opportunity to get out there more. the army jeep is pretty fun. i built it about 6 years ago, but i think after the chevy is done, i will do a refurb on it and improve on some of the stuff i have been griping about for years.

I sent the pan to the PC guy today. if it comes back pink, we'll know it was Chingon! he is supposed to be applying a clear to it so it wont get dingy with time.

I actually dig the red and blue fittings. I have switched everything on the Sub over to steel fittings, so no red and blue for me anymore.

As cool as your Jeep is, it is kind of a blunt object in that group of fancy trucks.

Re: 72 k20 project

No joke there! everyone else is set up for hauling it across the dessert. the burb is probably the closest to a regular wheeler in the group. actually, the rear suspension in the jeep is one of the things i want to do, and to much time hanging out with these dudes has got me seriously considering a coil over rear set up...

Re: 72 k20 project

Still waiting on the pan at PC. so, i got this engine hauled home and the waiting starts.

but, there are a few things to do before the engine goes in.

install manifold studs

install primary turbo support

i also installed the yet to be finished water inlet and glued on the lower alternator brace tabs.

time to finish the inlet and paint the bare spots.

i was looking at some other stuff that i need to measure and fab, and realized there was never a good picture to show how tight the fuel tank is located.

this is full rear dump. tank is to the left and the top of the dana 80 is center

an it has to be centered or it will get into the bumper bolts on either side
