if you go to the local exhaust shop and they bend pipe for you, they use a compression bender. That bender wrinkles or reduces the pipe diameter in the bend, because the internal diameter is not supported with a mandrel. the mandrel bends you buy are bent with a internal mandrel or "pig" that follows the bender thru the bend and supports the diameter for smoother bends.
