LFD's C50 Web Build
Maybe someday!

So for the longest time I have been drawn to the Top Kicks for tow vehicles but you guys know me and I could never just buy one and go. I would have to build it and have it be unique. So here is a Photoshop that was done by a few different guys on the board for me of what I think would be a bad @ss build.

Their is a 67/68 C50+ here in town that I went and looked at today just to see what kind of shape it was in and what the differences are between them and regular C10-30's. Looks like the cab is about the same except for the firewall. The dish is much larger and the tire tubs are larger as well but other than that not much difference. The truck only has 19K on the ticker and I can not see one of these being driven 119K but who knows. I could get the truck with out the Dump bed for about 1K then sell off the complete chassis for what ever once I find a new one. For now like the name implies this is just a Web build to think out side the norm and see what is possible. It may happen or it may not I don't know for sure.

What my mind build (for now) would be is to drop the cab and front end on a modern 1Ton chassis with a diesel and automatic (thinking a Dodge crew cab dually chassis and running gear) but if I went mid 80's chevy for the chassis I know I could do a set of Porters C30 arms to bring in the front tires just a bit. Next would be the LFD 4 door crew cab treatment. Then do a 10 lug conversion and lay the running boards on the ground like in the P-Chop. I think I would still do a Cummins in the Chevy frame for power and simplicity. I would then take a LWB fleet side bed and graft a set of NOS 67 step side fenders onto it for rear tire coverage. It would get a 5th wheel or goose neck trailer hitch and I would use this to pull my cars to shows all over the place.

The reason I would swap out the chassis is to get something a bit more modern and to drop it's insurance statues down to a 1Ton. I would never be pulling anything bigger than say a 30' enclosed trailer so it would be just fine if done right.

And a few more. It has the full gauge cluster, protecto plate (that I already bought from him for $30) and no real signs of rust other than the rear of both front fenders. The roof was smashed in a bit but that would be changed out when I did the crew cab conversion.

Livrat has the same thoughts, he was telling me about it/showed me some pictures of what he wants to build when I was at his shop.

I think I'd go with a Chevy duramax 1 ton frame and keep it 4wd, and lower it (just cause you can). Maybe find one with the manual (I think it's a 6 speed manual), but the allison is supposed to be a great tranny.....so that's a tough call there.

has to have some big stainless stacks behind the cab

I think to keep the proportion right, probably would be best to keep a long fleetside bed, especially with the dually wheel covers.

Just a thought, but what about some modern top kick mirror painted body color rather then the older style.

Well I was up at the Ford auto recyclers today picking up some parts I need to mod for the owner so I stopped by the chevy and dodge places as well. I can pick up a 96 chevy 1Ton crew cab dually chassis as a full roller for about $1500 no motor or trans. I can get a similar set up from Dodge but it was a 90 1Ton utility dually chassis. I think I would rather stay with the chevy chassis but I would most likely go with a Dodge Cummins turbo because it will fit a lot better in the engine bay and my father in-law has 30+ years as a buss mechanic and worked on and rebuilt the cummins motors in his sleep. Plus if I go with the 94-97 cummins motor their is no computer to deal with and I love the sound of a pumped turbo cumins with stacks, kind of has that big rig sound and feel. I am glad this is a web build because I have already spent $2500 in web money that my toy fund does not currently have

Also in looking at the pics of the C50 I think a stock height chassis will already have the running boards sitting fairly low so to do a simple bag system should net out some running board scrapping real easy

I have spoken with Nate about this before and he had concerns about the amount of weight I would be having loaded and it might be a bit much for a dropmember. Plus with the running boards being about 10" lower then the rockers it will almost lay out with stock suspension

So that is why I want the 10 Lug semi rims and about a 33-36" tall tire. That will give it the looks I want plus allow me to bag it and be able to lower down a bit but I will not need to go as low as a dropmember because I figure the frame will be about 8-10" off the ground when my running boards are laid out. Does that make sense?

Also you guys know by Web Build that it may never be anything more than just that, built on the web only. I have 2 personal projects going right now and a big one to start in the next 6 months so funds are totally depleted for the next year or so but I will keep planing this and see where it goes.

I have my Son's 51 F1 to get on the road first. Then get my Tahoe moving under it's own power then sell off my rock crawler parts sold so I can afford to finish the other two then we will see. But until then lets keep planing and getting it all down on the web.

I am not into the build quite yet, more or less just in the parts collecting stage.. (Hopefully in Jan it will end up in the shop) So far I have a 71 burb body, a 67 C60 cab and nose (boy, I didn't realize how big those were, It would not fit on my trailer unless turned sideways! plus it took too guys just to pick up the bumper!), I also have a 71 GMC 1 ton dually rust bucket.. The best part is the burb was free, the 1 ton was free and the C60 was $300...
Its the Dodge axles and cummins 6BT that will make the cost rise significantly! I plan to use an 88-92 Dodge cummins 12 valve 6BT with an automatic overdrive, an early 70's Dodge remote mounted NP205 Transfer case and a Dodge Dana 3:54 ratio 60 dually front and Dana 70 rear.

You were close when you said they C60 cab looks about the same with the exception of the firewall.. the are a few other small differences, (It took me awhile to figure out how to get the nose off)
The rocker panel is different at the front, inner kick panel is different, the A pillar is different to clear the fender/inner fender, the front cab support is modified a bit, You may be able to see those in the first picture..

Very cool! So are you just going to run 8 lug or swap over to 10 lug rims? I think with the size of the wheel opening it just calls for some 10 luggers but they get pricy quick. What are your plans for the bed (style, length and so on) and I may have missed it but what frame will you use?

Yep you are right every different part you mentioned is all part of the firewall

I am hoping to use a set of 8 lug 19.5's.. ( A buddy has an extra set laying at his shop)
I have a 71 GMC 157" inch dually chassis, which I will convert to 4X4 with Dodge axles, from my initial quicky measurements It appears I will need to move the burb body 7 inches forward from the stock location to make the front wheelwell openings line up with the wheels. I plan to cut the burb body off about midway above the 3rd door and put a pickup cab rear on using the stock 33" inch 3rd door with a curved pickup window frame. (could I talk you into cloning your tahoes 4th door post, hinges and latch?)

Orginally I planned on using a stock LWB with a cut down 67 stepside fenders to cover up the Duals, but after some more quick measuring it looks like the longbox will be about 6 inches short.. haven't decided to either use a longhorn bed with a custom metal floor, Or move the rear axle assembly forward.. I will hold off on that part until I get the burb body with the pickup cab rear panel and C60 nose mocked up on the chassis.
