Re: '74 Honda Z50

I powder coated the foot peg and kick stand parts, got them together and back on the engine.

Putting it back together. The fork-stops are broken off the frame, wish I'd noticed before now...

Looking good John. You'll be running it down the street here shortly. I think you need at least two of them.

Re: '74 Honda Z50

I probably need three, with two sons in the house. I would have put 100,000 miles on one of these if I'd had one growing up. Just neat little bikes. This is a screw-up, I should have caught this. Oh well. I took it apart to make room for welding and made a stop. I bought a welder but don't have gas or experience yet so a friend is going to burn this in for me. He's under the weather now, we'll get it fixed soon enough.

Re: '74 Honda Z50

No, I haven't finished it. And it doesn't look very good right now with eight months of shop dust on it. When this happened I hadn't started welding yet. I've since started welding some and I think I can weld that stop on. I'll get working on it shortly, I'm tired of stepping over it. LOL

Did you see the one that was done at Gas Monkey for the show? It "sold" at an auction for $5200...after it was turned in to a trike...

That was cool. He put too much motor on it, but still. The green and the wheels, looked great.

Is the engine ready to go too John? And where would you find one of those trike kits for one?

Re: '74 Honda Z50

I don't know where he got that trike kit, I'm not sure if it was even specific to the Honda 50. That was cool though. The motor has never fired. But it does have spark. I rebuilt the carb and put new clutch discs in but that's it. The tank is not quite ready, I need to topcoat it again and clear it. I'll get back on it.

Thanks! My youngest just outgrew his XR80, we sold it a few weeks back. They're great bikes, one of my favorites. I welded that tab on today. I'm new to welding so when I got done I whacked it a few times with a hammer. It stayed put so I must've done OK. Here's a pic after dressing it up and before spraying it with primer.

Re: '74 Honda Z50

I've still got to finish the tank then decide what to do for the muffler. I have a decent original (on the floor to the right of the bike), but the heat shield screws are rusted in and I don't have a torch, so I don't know if I want to pay someone to remove them or get a reproduction muffler. I'm leaning toward fixing the original. Here's where it sits now.

Re: '74 Honda Z50

Nice job!
I have two 74 QA 50's
two 1969 Z50A's
A 1970 Z50A
And one project bike with a Z50 frame, SL 70 swingarm, Sl 70 Forks Front wheel is from and ST90 And rear will be from a XR 75.
It will have a headlight and tailight as well as a speedometer.
Engine is a CT70H with manual clutch.
I have a 90cc head and piston for it but not installed yet.
It is just in the mock up stage right now and will get the treatment once it is all together.
I cannot seem to part with any of them. I guess cuz they all run good. They all need this done to them as well.

Re: '74 Honda Z50

Thanks! I wish I could say it's done but it looks the same except for a coat of dust on it. I removed the old seat cover and sandblasted/painted the seat base. I have a new seat cover and need some upholstery rivets for motorcycle seats, I found some that look nice on a Z50 site, maybe planetminis?, but they were out of them. I had some reproduction decals, and I started with them but tore one for the tank, I need to order a replacement set and get them on and clear coated. It'll get another round of attention soon, maybe I'll finish it this time before getting distracted by something else.

Re: '74 Honda Z50

I finally finished my 1970 CT70H that I got from a neighbor. It was dead on the floor. Kept the original paint then cobbled the rest together from parts I got from some buddies and on-line. Has an SL motor that I got from the same neighbor and rebuilt. Not sure where the original CT70 motor went. Between phases on my '59 Truck, I had a blast putting it together and now enjoy the occasional neighborhood ride but mostly enjoy looking at it.

The best part is that it's NOT perfect. Everyone rides it without me cringing. Can't wait to see yours completed.
