Shannon great work on the doors, as always you make this stuff look easy! Do you overlap your new panels and weld them on or butt them together? also I heard you mention 'glue'? what adhesives do you use, can this been done for the panels instead of welding or in addition to the welds?

Also what is the shrinking disk tool you mention? got a pic or p/n?

Ptc, Thank you. I alway butt weld my panel in. I never do an overlap because the metal is too thick to hammer and dolly and it also gives the moisture a place to hid and rust between the seam. The glue bit is an inside joke between my buddy Trently (aussie54) , we use that instead of welding joking around. There are some good glue but that take an overlap seam to use it. The stuff is very strong though.
The shrinking disc I use is a 9 inch wheel that I just keep on theat Craftsman grinder. I weld my panels the grind them. If I can get to the backside I grind it too. I then hammer and dolly the panel to take amy warping. Like I said I grind both side because I have a good set of hammer and dollies from dagger tools and I like to keep them nice. So no hammering on bumpy welds. Then I run the shrinking disc over it. It will only heat up the high spots and the spray it with water out of a squirt bottle and it shrinks the high spots. It works really well. I bought it from Wray Schelin I think off flea bay a few years ago. I have a 4 and 9 inch one and it came with a video too. His website is www.proshaper.com.

I have a question for you. I have never used a shrinking disc but on the side of my suburban just above the gas fill hole it is oil canned. Apparently I had too much heat in the area when welding the hole shut. Would you use a shrinking disc to pull the metal back out to get rid of the oil canning?

Youngrodder, yes. Like I said grind the weldon both sides and hammer and dolly first. Then use the disc. On my panel truck I had the same problem. I even use it on the inside because that is where the high spot was. Just keep working on both sides till it went away. I have a problem, I am a tool junkie. But it is well worth the money. I hardly even use the smaller one.

shannon, noted on how you did you bowl. I plan to get a stump, hollow it out and hammer a full sheet, then planish (just for kicks to learn, I haven't had time to get crazy with that type of shaping) I will add that the Shrinking discs are like the best kept secret in metal working.

Henry, I don't know it you could do tight of a radius in a stump. It might be just too much material to gather with out a mechanical advantage on a machine. Worth a try though. I made my air planishing hammer so it has more power over a HF unit that a buddy has. It worked it pretty fast. Yes the shrinking disc has saved my a lot of work.

Henry, it is so cool to see how people do things. There are a lot of different way to do things.

Started the morning finishing up the transmission tunnel. I sheared 2 1 inch wide strips and used the stretcher shrinker to get my radius , then weld it on and ground it up. Then cut and weld the 3 lower cab supports in the rear of the cab. I had 2 4x11 inch areas in the rear of the floor that I had to made so they are now done too. I had to hole saw a hole in each of them because that is where the rear cab bolts are.

Next was the suicide doors. The hinges were from rocky hinge. They are nice looking units. I did the drivers side first. I still have to put some bracing in at the rear on the hinges to tie them in good to the body. I put the hinges in the body and then put the door up and marked where the hinge strap pockets were going to go. Then tacked them in the door after I had the door where I wanted it. Checked to see how it swung and I was happy so I welded it up. One thing I have to do is get rid of the old latch area on the door because it springs the door out a little but that is an easy fix. I should have the other door done this week . Then the one piece glass is next and the latches after that.

Man it has been a while since I posted and I have been fabricating like mad. I have the door both hung and swung. I also opened up the inside of the doors so it will be easier to put the power windows in. I started to gap the drivers door. Then a buddies son in law needed a bed. So I decided to build that one and another bed for ken's truck too.

Now time for some bed pictures. I am making one factory bed and one curved front panel bed. The curved one goes to ken's truck. His hased a raised floor and I will be using the roll pan from his other bed. I also made the provision to build an aluminum tonneau cover too. The straight panel has another 1/8 plate spot welded inside the tube so I can drill and tap it for the hinge.

The factory bed is going to get some lights in the tubes in the rear so I used a 3/8 fuel line for a wire run. I only have to tig weld the caps for the stake pockets and make the sst tail gate hinges and a few other thing and it will be done.

Now this is ken's bed. It may end up getting a set of mini tubs yet. I am also going to fab up 2 sets of smooth running boards for Ken and the other truck I fabbing up the bed for. I have also been busy with the new/old house. The one that I said that the house really did not need anything! RIGHT! 3 weeks ago I had to replace the sewer pipe in the wall because of a 3 ft long crack running down the cast iron pipe. It had been leaking for awhile and just did not know it. The old owner didn't apparently either. Lol. Then put the ac units in this week and needless to say ended up running a lot of new electric wire. I had the fish 2) #12 wires from the basement through both 1st and 2nd floor and up into the attic. Now we are good to go. Never a dull moment!
