Re: El Camino....
Both mine have worn commercial plates, so California DMV calls them a truck.

Re: El Camino....
I know that what people think in general is one thing, but the gov is always looking to take a nick from your wallet. I had a Chevy Vega panel "wagon" that was classified as a truck due to not having rear side windows. I had to buy commercial plates for it, too. 1/4T "truck".

Re: El Camino....
If your friends ask you to help them move. Then it's a truck.

Re: El Camino....
State registrations aside, it's whichever you think it is. I bought a new El Camino SS (396/375hp, TH400) in 1969. Never really thought I was driving a truck. But that's just me.... opinions vary.

Re: El Camino....
What are you guys talking about?? El Camino is The Road!!
- Cars haul people, so they're designed to maximize seating for that size vehicle (except some sports cars) - Trucks haul cargo, so they're designed to maximize cargo area for that size vehicle ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- - There was the Chevelle. They came as 2 or 4 door sedan, 2 door sports coupe, 2 door convertible, or 4 door station wagon. They are all cars. - Then there is the El Camino. It came as a truck. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In case no one picked up on it, the picture thread I started not long ago, still on pg1, with the title "Not just El Caminos" is referring to this same question. (and a lot more interesting )

Re: El Camino....
Uhhh... I wouldn't ask any opinion questions with both present.
I think the "argument" stems from the El Camino being "based" on a car chassis and sharing car sheet metal. Fact is, GM can do what they want with their designs and parts and they chose to build a pickup based on a car that filled a gap between car and truck (that mini trucks later came along to fill). To satisfy those who argue it's not a truck... Ok, you are right. It's a pickup. You leave the truck out of it. Any light duty (1/2t - 1t) personal use pickup truck is not a truck compared to medium and heavy duty purely commercial trucks. Do you pull into the weigh stations that have a sign that says "all trucks"? There were Utes in Australia long before the El Camino came out here in '59. There were both car and truck based and they were all Utes, all pickups. It's just a stupid thing to argue. I doubt the Aussies argue over a Ute being a car or truck International is a truck company that didn't build cars, but they built pickup trucks and Utes Chrysler Corp built both cars and trucks, made Ute versions of both So did GM

Re: El Camino....
Mmmmmm. My AMX is a truck then My c20 has passenger plates on it. Reg does say pickup. The only thing that makes a Camino a truck is it has an open bed.

Re: El Camino....
I made that as a joke for my local truck club last fall, got some good laughs. I love El Caminos, especially the 59 & 60. I believe the DMV titles them as light duty trucks in SC as well.

Re: El Camino....
Yeah , that doesn't really hold true. There are roadsters, sports cars, and business coupes. Also, by that logic ext cabs and crew cabs are cars. I agree to some degree on some 1/2t trucks, especially with hard bed cover... or trunk lid and skinny profile non weight hauling wheels and more trim that a Cadillac.

Re: El Camino....
To me a truck has a separate bed. That can be removed and replaced with any number of configurations. Try doing that with a Camino or avalanche.
