71 Burb 4x4.....New Adventure

Bought this burb about 3 weeks ago. I've been eyeballing it for years at the local chevy dealership. The owner used it for hunting and snow plowing the parking lot.

It has 138,000 on the body and about 15,000 on a rebuilt sbc 400. It needed a tune up and a good cleaning up. It runs really strong!

Cool thing is that its a 3/4 ton 4x4 four speed.

I know you guys love pics and that's the only reason I'm posting this thread.

Here goes! This is the day I picked it up.

Re: 71 Burb 4x4.....New Adventure

First order of business was to check and change all fluids. I put new belts on and set the timing, plus a new battery. It's been sitting in the back lot for about 5 years so it needed a little TLC.

I spent about ten hours buffing and waxing the paint. It had a serious case of clear coat peel!

Interior was in pretty good shape although I had to replace the 80's black steering wheel.

Re: 71 Burb 4x4.....New Adventure

Rims were a little dated and the receipt in the glove box showed that the tires were new in 1999. Of course that means a new set of rims and tires.

I went with pro comp rock crawlers and some amazon Chinese brand 285/75/16 mud tires. Whole thing cost about 750 with free shipping!

Re: 71 Burb 4x4.....New Adventure

Next order of business was a road trip. I took my brother in law to our place over in the Oklahoma panhandle. We took back roads from my house here in New Mexico and did about 280 miles ( There was only about 100 miles of paved roads ).

The "Dry" Cimarron was running some good water......no I didn't try to cross it, which meant a 40 miles detour to get to the other side of the ranch! I needed gas anyway and my bro in law needed some more beer and some No Man's Land Beef Jerky!

By the way, the BIL is a city boy and he about crapped his pants on this road along the river. It is about a 30 foot drop into the river!

Re: 71 Burb 4x4.....New Adventure

Last of my pics.

First pic is where we normally drive across the river. There is a big hole you have to drop into and right now the hood would have been under water had we tried to cross.

We have some cool old homesteads from the late 1800's on our property!

Great story and nice pictures. Looks like you folks have had some good rains. Those old Limestone buildings are neat. I have a ghost town near me that has a couple of them still standing. There is also the remains of an old Limestone kiln located there.

Thanks for posting those. Nice Burb also. Good to see it doing what they were built to do.

Thanks! We were extremely dry until August so the rains have been a blessing.
Those old homesteaders were definetly tough!

Much appreciated!

My only other plans are some Alcoa leaf springs and a new starter due to heat soak from the headers. I'll post up more pics when I take it on another road trip.

It is great to see a truck being used for what it was made for.

John

I put one of the mini starters on my '67 and I never had another problem with heat soak. I also had a problem with the gas boiling in the float bowl if I had been driving it on the highway and had to set with it idling for a while. A phenolic or plastic spacer cures that problem.

Neat burb. I really like 3/4 4x4 burbs. Id rather have an automatic though, my knees dislike clutches.

I've got one of those on the white 72 and so far it works great. I had the old starter off the white one and just put it in the burb the other night. Funny thing you bring up the gas boiling problem......mine does that too and I just happen to have a phenolic spacer tucked away somewhere....now I just have to find it!
