Re: Here is a "Not Your Typical" 4wd Blazer build

The problem is I dont have room in my new garage for the engine hoist, so fabbing something and trying to test fit is not going to happen. I was hoping I can buy mounts that have been done so they can drop in place.

Why have I never seen this build before?......guess I'm blind. Great work and nice blazer! Anyway for LSx 4x4 mounts go to the LSx section of the site and read Thealien's post that is stickied at the top. I think he used DIY4x4.

Re: Here is a "Not Your Typical" 4wd Blazer build

Ok........................ after moving things around, it looks like I might have room in my garage to get things started again. It will be tight, but its possible. I just need to figure a way to get my welder power to the garage since my condo is over the top of my garage and the electrical panel is up there.
I also need a set (4) of those tire dolly things so I can move the Blazer around the garage. If anybody has these laying around, and you want to get rid of them, please let me know. Thanks for the encouragement everybody!! Stay tuned.....

Excellent. As far as dollies go, I justbough this set and was real happy with them.
Amazon.com: Merrick Machine (MERM998002) 12"... Amazon.com: Merrick Machine (MERM998002) 12"...
Depends on what you need for a power supply, but there are extension cords available or just make your own with the right plug ins and wire. If it's a condo, I'm guessing you are buying it and can drill some holes to route wire etc. After building a race suspension, I would think you could figure out how to add an outlet downstairs.

Those are exactly what I am looking for, thanks for the link.
As far as the power goes, yeah, I can make a cord, but I cannot drag it through there to get it into the garage over the light beige carpet. Also, I am renting, so there goes that idea................. But, I am an electrician, so I have a few tricks up my sleeve....

Re: Here is a "Not Your Typical" 4wd Blazer build

Ok, not really a "progress" update, but I am moving in the right direction again

I cheaped out and got the cheap dollies from Harbor Freight. They are rated for 1000lbs each, so I figured it would be enough............ WRONG!! Both the rear dollies buckled the first move!! Funny, you get what you pay for. I will have to beef them up a little then they should be good.
Next, I was contemplating on doing something different with my motor mounts. On earlier pages, I posted pics of how I used the stock LSX mounts and the stock cross member, but after too much time of thinking, I decided I need to do it the right way. So, I will be fabbing them myself. Doing away with the cross member and using a bushing, motor plate and tube to the frame. Here is a preview of the parts......

Re: Here is a "Not Your Typical" 4wd Blazer build

I had looked at those HF dollies and read some of the more negative reviews, which is why I went with something different. Once you get the motor mount situation settled, what's next on the punch list?

Yeah, trying to save me a buch will end up costing more in the long run. Oh well, by the time I am done with them, they will be able to move a house

Next on the agenda after the engine and trans are in and all the mounts are done is to mock up the radiator mounts. It will use the stock core support, but additional bracing will be needed I think. Then I will make the mount for the trans cooler. Its a mini radiator with a fan, so that will get mounted under the floor next to the trans.

Thanks!! BUT................. It will be quite slow at this point. I am barely set up in my new, smaller garage, so that will definately slow progress down some.

Re: Here is a "Not Your Typical" 4wd Blazer build

Shouldn't the radiator be mounted in back on a desert racer? Just make the hole in the rad support funnel into a huge ram jet intake system . You know I had to go back to post 200, 6/21/2009 for pics of this thing. Then I was looking at your tubing bender and thinking you need to send me plans to build one myself, cause I want to do some tube work later on.

This is a wannabe desert racer!!
The location can be in the front as long as its well protected against rocks. Most of the cars have the radiator in the rear because they are rear engine cars. When you see a trophy truck with a radiator(s) in the rear just behind the cab, they are usually tranny coolers, not engine coolers. This Blazer will never see a race, but I dont want to let it know that

Re: Here is a "Not Your Typical" 4wd Blazer build

Hhhmmmmmm, what to do???
I just found a 6.0 from an '04 truck today that I will be picking up tomorrow. Should I keep my built, ready to drop in 5.3 or should I freshen up the 6.0 and use that, or sell it? It is complete with ecm, harness and only 40k miles....... I dont really need the extra ponies of the 6.0. but like they say, no "replacement for displacement" I am only gonna use one of these two, most likely the 5.3, but I could not pass up the deal on the 6.0

go with the 6.0 if u have it all fab up for the 5.3 its a direct bolt in, I belive it uses the same harness, friend of mine had to replace motor in his truck swapped in a 6.0 and used the 5.3 harness or so I have heard, nice build though love the cage, I am new to site so I have just started looking at everyones build and soaking up the info

I though about it, but the 5.3 is complete with a cam, harness and the computer tuned to my application. The 6.0 is also complete with the harness and computer but it is completely stock. I would have to open it up to install a cam (because it cant be stock ) then modify the harness for my application and have the computer tuned to my application as well. My 5.3 should be about 400 hp as it sits now and is ready to go, not sure if I want to start over again just to gain a few ponies. Its a tough decision, but I will probably off the 6.0 as it looks right now.

I would run the 6.0L but since you already have your time and money invested in the 5.3L, that may be the way to go. From the factory, 5.3L's made 270-305hp, while 6.0L's made 300-340hp. So, there isn't that much of a difference while stock. If you begin making mods though, you'd have that much more engine to breath power through.
