I hate 4.10 gears

My 70 lwb "Road Dog" hates them even worse. I did all the calculations before changing from 3.07's. But driving is believing. How it went down was,
after i changed out to my new motor I wanted a little more low end (stump puller) grunt but now I'm in forth gear at 40mph. and I can't stand it.
specs: 70 lwb 4x4, built 355 motor, sm465 4 speed manual tranny, np205 transfer case.
Luckily I swapped out only the rear to see if I liked the 4.10's or not.

NOT.

I'll be putting back the 3.07's today. I also think half my problem is that
sm465. I would love a 700r4.

Re: I hate 4.10 gears

You just need bigger tires. Try some 35's and the 4.10 will be just about right. I am running 4.56 with 38" tires and I am thinking about going to 5.13 and 40's. I do have the 700r4 though.

Re: I hate 4.10 gears

Tell me about it. I have a sm465 and 4:10s and that 4th gear is a range of 15mph-55mph, ha. I can just about start it in 3rd from a stop.

Re: I hate 4.10 gears

There are alot of Ratio's in between that. 3.07 seems really high for a 4x 4.10 is about right with 35's. If your running a smaller tires or a lower tranny maybe 3.55 would be the best of both worlds or as some may say the sweet spot!

I'll be running 4.10s in my 68, but that will be with a 4L60E and ~29" tires.

Re: I hate 4.10 gears

LOL I ran 4.56 gears for about 3 weeks in my 69 2wd stepside with 205x60x15 tires. I had a healthy 350 balanced and blueprinted. MAN was I fast from 0-50mph started out in 3rd all the time.

In a 4x4 with 33 or 35" tires 4.10's should be pretty nice.
The main thing your noticing is a HUGE jump from 3.07's
It would realy help to know what size tire your running but 3.40 down to 3.73 would be about right for 31" tires alot of guys will run 3.73 even with 33-35" tires for better economy. IF your engine is healthy enough you should still have good low end with that combo.

There IS a lot of other gear ratios in between 3.07 and 4.10 but the man ones to look at are 3.07, 3.40, 3.73, 4.10.
One because they provide noticable differences and two because they was available stock ratios from GM. Suppliers will make you almost any gears you want but going from a 3.07 to lets say a 3.15 wont make much differnce.

My vote is for 35" tires and keep the 4.10's.

NOTE: the highest stock gear ratio in a truck I have seen is a 2.73 so yes its close to 2.56.

Damn that would be some white knuckle driving for me as aerodynamic as these trucks the wind noise had to make it seem like you were going a heck of a lot faster

Re: I hate 4.10 gears

My 71 C20 with 245 x 16 street tires and 4.11 rear gets 12.5 going back and forth to work but the trip is 23 miles each way so it gets spendy. I drive on a 55 mph road but if I went over on the freeway I think I would be getting about 10. I am hunting for a 3.55 rear or even a 3.73.

Re: I hate 4.10 gears

I got 12.5 in my blue`72 truck with 4.10s and 35" tires.I`d roll at 60-62 on the speedo, which was about 66-68 mph.The truck had a 400 SBC.It seemed to be an ideal set-up.It had plenty of bottom end and just rolled on the tires with little throttle.

Re: I hate 4.10 gears

I've got 4.09 gears in. mine with 35 in tires and a Gear Vendors OD. It runs 65 at around 2200 RPM. the 383 will still set you back in the seat with the OD off.

Re: I hate 4.10 gears

4.10's with a sm465 is like a two speed. At least with the 3.07's I can fake a 3 speed again.

Sounds like all your rigs are bad ass. right on!!!!!
