Bucket Seat Foam Repair

I have a set of '67-'68 buddy buckets which need some foam repair on the corner and I have a few questions:

1) My Camaro Restoration Handbook recommends using rebond foam (see a picture here: http://www.diymotorcycleseat.com/foam_types.htm) for repairs. Has anyone worked with this stuff or something else that they could recommend? Where can I buy rebond foam (mail order)? Foam from the local hobby shop is probably too soft?

2) Cutting and shaping the foam seems simple enough (scissor, carving knife, serrated knife, flap sand disk, etc).

3) For attaching the foam patch, I've read recomendations on contact cement, 3M 74 spray adhesive, or 3M 77 spray adhesive. Has anyone used these?

I can't help you but I am interested in what you end up doing.

I have a local upholstery company tha I use for foam work and the cost is very reasonable but I am always looking for improvements on seats.

Although they don't have rebond foam, they do have automotive foam, burlap, thread, and upholstery and are about 350 miles from me: http://www.midwestfabrics.com/index....duct_list&c=21

I sent them an email asking which foam firmness would be most appropriate.

There is a local guy who does upholstery work, but I need to check next week if he is into automotive.

I'm having this done to my bucket seats. I dropped them off about two weeks ago and haven't heard from him. So i went by there today just to see what he has done. Which he hasn't done much of anything. He said he has been sick for the last 9 days. Anyway, he showed me some foam that he ordered for my seats and he said that he will build up the bad parts with it. Seams to be pretty good stuff. He did say that it's pretty expensive tho. He did say he's going to use some glue, but not sure what kind. Some of the wires that's in the seats will need repaired also. Can't wait to get them back, just don't know how long i should give him. He said he'll have them done this week, but i've heard that before.

My son does this work and learned his trade at WyoTech. He did my buddy buckets and used a spray adhesive and foam. We have a BIG roll of it so PM me with how much you need...we buyin bulk. The adhesive is RP 2020 Foam and Fabric Spray Adhesive. It is a pressure sensitive adhesive and is available from your local supplier to professional upholstery shops. If you have a problem finding them I could probably provide you with a can.

Darnit Mike, I didn't know your son did auto upholstery!! I would have taken my bench seat to him instead of the knucklehead that did mine.

Brad, He only does it when he needs money...which means you have to wait a bit. He is in school full-time now studying fire fighting science...his new passion...LOL!

My local upholstery guy does do automotive, but wants $600 labor plus material to do my buddy buckets.

I contacted Midwest Fabrics and they recommend the HR60 foam.

I'd like to buy foam, adhesive, and ready made covers and attempt this myself.

This is what I found when I rebuilt my Blazer's bucket and rear bench.
Some obvious foam repair in the past.




I used some foam I bought from a local upholstery shop. Sold me a 1" this piece of seat foam for $20.00.
Way more than I needed.
Glued in place with some 3M adhesive spray. And shaped it with a electric hand held meat slicer I got at a 2nd hand store.
