2004 gmc sierra duramax stuff into my 71 GMC 3/4 ton

hey guys. this past week my dad was coming back up from Sarasota, Florida headed back to massachusetts and some idiot ran through a stop sign and slammed into his drivers side front corner and wrecked his truck. my dads of but the truck is probably totaled. the collision shop said it would need a whole new frame but didnt touch the drivetrain. my question is if the insurance company ends up totaling his truck, do u think it would be worth it to buy the truck back for parts, have it towed back to massachusetts, and swap the motor, drivetrain, seats, steering column, wheels and tires, over to the 71 GMC? and sell the rest of the stuff that wont work with the 71?
his truck is a 2004 GMC Sierra 2500HD Duramax diesel. its a 4x4 crew cab pickup with an 8' bed, same bolt pattern as my 71 8 lug. its got stainless steel tube bars, power programmer, and extang tonneau cover? Has anyone ever done this kind of thing before? money would be tight, and id only consider it if it was worth it and alot of stuff was bolt on thanks
my truck is a 71 GMC 2500 2wd 3/4 ton the 327 in it is ok but the 700r4 needs to be adjusted at a shop and leaks.

have any of you bought a vehicle back from the insurance company that was totalled? how does it work?

There would be a lot of work to do the swap, but it has been done and might be worthwhile since you have (may have) the entire truck to get all the sensors and all that you will need.

Been a while since I did a buy back from the insurance Co, but quite a few folks did at my work after Katrina. About the only thing I know is the title (least in MS) will be a salvage title. Since you are planning on disassembling it for parts, that will not effect resale as much as if you were going to rebuild it yourself and sell later.

Re: 2004 gmc sierra duramax stuff into my 71 GMC 3/4 ton

It was actually an 08. He said it took quite a while to put it together but it was worth it. he said the only thing that he had to cut was the front of the floor pan and fire wall to make it all fit and he slid the bed back a few inches and stretched the rear upper cab corners. But it is truely a beutiful truck. The best part is, He's got a 5year 100k mile warranty from chevrolet and his property taxes arent but $13.00 dollars a year.( some of you may be lucky enough to not know what property taxes are, but here in south carolina, its another way for the state to steal money from you. and it stinks)

do you happen to know who this guy is? is he on the forum? this is basically what i am doing with my 69 c10, but im going to be using the entire chassis from an 01 yukon. hadnt thought about using the dash like that, but that is sweet. id like to know what all he had to do to get that dash in there. my firewall is going to need a fair amount of work anyway because of rust, so i may just fab this up too. thanks for posting pics of this(and i hate you for it too, lol....makes more work for me).

Looks like the guy with the duramax did a hell of a job, looks nice and clean. But it sure looks like its lacking in legroom.

Damn that makes me crazy!

If I could build any truck. It would be that 4wd 4dr crew cab with the small back window thats here on the board. Add a short bed. Throw in this dash and Engine trans combo. Poof my ultimate truck!

Oh, I just noticed too. Did you see he has the rear view in there with the onstar? That would be hilarious. Call them out to find a truck that doesn't exist.. Tell em yeah my 71 has the keys locked in it. Can you unlock it for me?

mine was gonna cost around $600 towed from palm bay, fl to huntersville, nc. so i decide to wait till my buddy was going to be headed this way to see family and friends. he's pulling it up with a tow bar.

Well when I wrecked my 03 GMC I thought about buying it for parts. Insurance told me that the law here wouldn't let me cause it's newer than 9 years old. That might be a hang up for you. Otherwise I say go for it.

The what happens with your truck? If it's totaled and they're not going to fix it then what do they do with it?

Re: 2004 gmc sierra duramax stuff into my 71 GMC 3/4 ton

I`m surprised that guy used an`08 Duramax. That was the first year emmissions motor and everyone I know scrambled and search to find the last`07 Classics.
I totalled a truck that was under 9 years old and bought it back.I had alot of money in it and had to fight over the pay-off.It was 8 years old and they offered $12,000 and change.I itemized what I put in it and they came back with $16,000 and change.I accepted if they let me keep the truck and they agreed.I made sure not to let them know it had 6 months(15,000- miles) on an $8,600 motor. This was local and I had it hauled from the recovery company to my friend`s body shop the morning after the accident so it would be in my court. They really didn`t like that. But,it`s your truck until you get paid, right?Besides, you`d want your bodyman to deal with the adjuster.I`ve never been in an out of state situation.
I believe $.80 per mile is the rate these days. At,least I`ve seen one company resently offering that. Can it be driven onto the truck? They`d want nore for a non-operable vehicle.
