Anyone have step X step instructions on how to install a locker in a 72 3/4 4x4 10 bolt axle?

By 10 bolt I presume you are talking about an HO52. If you Google HO 52 you may find some installation instructions or try No-Spin. You have to remove the carrier, remove the ring gear, split the carrier and install the locker. Then bolt it all together again and reset the ring and pinion.

The Chevrolet Overhaul manuals give step-by-step instructions on dissassembly of H052 3rds.

Re: locker info needed

It is done and I appreciate the tips as well.
I have all the books a guy could need and they are OK.
The beauty of this board is the real life experience that is not in the books. That is why I ask questions that we all know can be found in general information in books.
I want (and inquiring minds) want to know what is not in the book.
Here is my take.
The carrier does indeed need to be removed from the housing. There are no shims to be kept track of because of the threaded tension adjusters. The book calls for a special spaner wrench that most of us do not have. A good pair of slip joint pliers works well.
The removal is pretty straight forward. Remove the ring bolts and split the case. Remove all the gears. The locker replaces everything.
I bought my locker used. They are under spring pressure and mine was held with a long bolt and a washer on each side.
Tip here; measure those washers first. I assembled the entire carrier and released the bolt only to find that one washer was larger and would not come out of the axle splined hole. So, put it back together, tear down the carrier again, release on a bench and grind two flats on the washer. Reassemble and then the washer slipped right out. Time spent, lesson learned.
It is also difficult to set this back up out of the housing. Holding for proper torque is a problem. I used a pipe in the yoke and did it but I redid all torques in the housing where the carrier is solid.
I also noticed that the backlash changes when the caps are torqued. They need to be loose to set preload and lash. This is also something that was redone in the housing with the mag base attached to the case.
Make sure to insert the axles at this point and test the locker.
It would not do the blood pressure good to find out later that there is a problem.
These are things not in books and I try not to assume that people have done this stuff before. Books are great resources but I want the dirty facts. Only experience can provide the time saving tips.
Thanks.
