6 Lug on Camaro Clip

I have a 56 GMC that I'm clipping with a 77 firebird chassis. My problem is I would like to keep the truck 6 Lug. I have access to a cnc machine but the hub face on the 11" rotor is not large enough to take the larger bolt pattern. Is there a rotor I can mount with a larger hub face that can be drilled to 6lug? even if I had to trim the total diameter to make it fit the 11" spindles?

I had an idea of mounting 12" spindle/rotor/calipers of a late 70s 80s even early 90s full size GM B/C body. Assuming the hub face is large enough to redrill or maybe a 6 Lug rotor that will fit straight on?

I Live in Melbourne Australia, I dont have the luxury of going to a local wrecker or pull apart & collect bits to try out. Almost everything second hand of a US vehicle, I need to have to imported. Any imput would be greatly appreciated, I'm keen to buy the bits I need & have them shipped out!

Re: 6 Lug on Camaro Clip

Kaycee, yeh first of all kinda think the 6 Lug has cool factor but also my truck still has the original 'spicer 45' rear end 307:1 gear. Its looks pretty much like a Dana 44.
Anyway if you have any tips on what rotors I could use preferably 11" so I could keep the Camaro spindles, let me know?

Re: 6 Lug on Camaro Clip

I don't know what the bolt pattern is on the "6 lug" 6x5, 6x5.5, 6x6.5 etc. So I can't help much.

But, if you try searching a site like www.rockauto.com you can compare vehicles by wheel bearings, and may be able to locate a replacement that way?

1977 Camaro
Front Outer SKF Part # BR2
Cup radius=.0500"; Width=.610"; Standout=.1350"; Outside diameter=1.7810"; Inside diameter=.7500"; Cup length=.4750"; Cone radius=.0500"; Cone length=.6550IN

Front Inner SKF Part # BR6
Cup length=.4650"; Width=.625"; Standout=.1600"; Outside diameter=2.3280"; Inside diameter=1.2500"; Cup radius=.0500"; Cone length=.6600IN

Lots of 6 lug nissan, mazda, dakota etc hubs out there. A little machining and bearing selection and 6 lug rotor. 6x5.5"

Not sure yet, yesterday I only managed to get the GMC clip back over the camaro subframe. Have one side A arms, spindle & wheel on just to check if centered, half a day spent just trimming all the internal sheet metal to clear A arms chassis rail etc...trucks at work so I'm having a few days off now to spend time with the kids.

Yep I do work on alot of Jap stuff & they are the correct lug pattern but I think it maybe way easyer to modify something GM.

Re: 6 Lug on Camaro Clip

You could possibly get a 71 Chevy K10 4x4 rotor to work with a bit of fitting up. You would most likely have to make a spacer ring to go between the hub and inside of the center hole of the rotor but that wouldn't be too difficult for anyone with a lathe.
http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/de...0062&ppt=C0009
Then redrill the hubs if there is enough room but that would be the main issue.
I looked at the Cadillac CTS-V rotors which are 6 lug on 115mm but they are a bit over 14 inches in diameter and a hundred US dollars each from the above source.
The best solution if you can find the right diameter Japanese pickup hub is to see if you can find bearings that will mate the hub to the spindle. Or machine the hubs for the GM bearings.

Something else to think about is seeing if a six lug roller bearing drum brake hub (I'm not sure which year they started using tapered roller bearings instead of ball bearings) might match up to the spindle and then use the 71/72 4x4 rotor.

Re: 6 Lug on Camaro Clip

I think I may have worked out way around my quest of running six lug.
"Could I please have some input if anyone knows if I have overlooked something"
Ok here goes, I have worked out via 2nd gen Camaro forums that a common brake upgrade is running 12" spindles,Calipers & redrilled or (LE1 Rotors). Doner cars such as: Buick Full Size- Le Sabre Wagon / Electra Wagon 1977-1994; Cadillac Fleetwood and Deville 1977-1984 // Brougham and Fleetwood 1985-1994; Chevy Full Size 1977-1996 Caprice, Impala, Belair, Biscayne;
Olds Delta 88, Delta 88 Wagon and Olds 98 1977-1992; Pontiac Full Size Bonneville, Catalina, Grandville 1977-1986

This swap is made easy because bearings, ball joints & tie rods are interchangeable. Now if I was to go with the 72 to pre 77 Full size 12" spindles they actually use C10 rotors (A5 bearing 1.25") I could then use 6L rotors from CPP. Apart from a larger lower BJ (6141) "which I can get around" & tie rod end this type spindle should work??
My basic question is are the early spindles same as the 77 up apart from bearing size, lower BJ hole & tie rod hole? If I'm missing something please let me know? Cheers!

One more thing to look into would maybe be newer Astro van rotors. Saw one in a parking lot yesterday and noticed it was 6 lug.

I have looked into the Astro van but judging by the pictures the hub depth looks too shallow.

I have a contact at Timken that is willing to help research an "interchange" bearing for your existing 77 Camaro spindle. What I need to know is what is the original application of the 6 lug rotor you will be using so that we can figure out the bearing/race sets and corresponding dimensions.

That would be great thanks. Anyway my plan is to use spindles, calipers, rotors that I can get here off a 73 Olds custom cruiser. It uses #5006R heavy duty 1.25" rotor which is the same part as C10 71-87 application.
Bearings listed for both are front outer BR3 Cone radius=.0500"; Width=.690"; Standout=.1400"; Outside diameter=1.9687"; Inside diameter=.8437"; Cup radius=.0500"; Cup length=.5500"; Cone length=.7200IN
Front inner:BR5 Width=.710"; Standout=.1600"; Outside diameter=2.5630"; Inside diameter=1.3750"; Cup radius=.0500"; Cup length=.5500"; Cone radius=.1400"; Cone length=.7200IN

Then purchase the six lug conversion rotors for a C10 71-87 from CPP & if my theory is correct that should work? My main concern is if the 73 (B/body) full size car spindle is the same as the 77 up 12" rotor( B/body) I know those spindles definitely bolt in between the the camaro A arms, its a common 2nd gen upgrade.
The differences I have worked out from early to late 70s spindles are the stub size for the bearings, "which is what I need for the Cpp rotors) Lower balljoint is differnent "that can be worked out" & tie rod which shouldn't be a big issue. As for the rest of the dimensions I'm not sure about, I dont have the two to compare.

Re: 6 Lug on Camaro Clip

I did the "B" body spindle on my 1965 Malibu SS. The Ball joint is different, but all you need to do is get the right ball joint for the spindle and turn it down you match the Firebird A arm. I went with an aftermarket outer Tie rod, but I believe Speedway has an adapter to reduce the taper size. If you need any measurements let me know.

Oh sh%t now I'm commited to get this done seriously cheaper & easyer if I had the luxury of having access to these parts in a bone yard I could round a heap of bits & experiment but all we have here is Aussie,Jap, Euro & also Korean crap.

Thanks, there is a also a taper to fatten up the Camaro 6145BJ to the early B/body 6141Bj size.
What year Spindle did you use? & are those PBR calipers you have fitted?? They are made here, we have them by the truck loads.

That's the taper adapter I was talking about. I don't remember the year of the donor but I can look up the casting numbers if you want. Yes they are PBR's.

Re: 6 Lug on Camaro Clip (completed!)

Ok guys, for the minority that maybe interested in keeping their Camaro clipped truck, 6 Lug all the way around here it is! I did cheat by not swaping spindles & rotors like I proposed in my OP but I did utilize some original components if any body can tell?

I basically used the original front drum hubs & seperated them from the brake drums. Machined the rear of the hub off flush, machined the center of the hub & the rotor snout so its a nice centered/slip fit. The rotor needs to be counter sunk to acommodate the stud bosses, drilled & tapped to take the high tensile 10mm counter sunk bolts that bolt the hub to the rotor. Bolt it together with plenty of loctite thread locker & there you have it 6 Lug Camaro rotors!

Re: 6 Lug on Camaro Clip

Bringing this back up as my first post-

I,m putting parts together for my '56 3100 and have been told that there is a newer light duty Chevrolet truck hub/rotor that fits the Camaro spindle- does anyone else have any more details?

Had also heard that using a '69 4WD front hub with a 90's rotor would work, but that seems less likely.

I posted this on the HAMB as well- one of the memebers there said that the '88 Light Duty hub/rotor might be the one we're looking for!
