Re: 1967 transfer cases

My 69 has a T221 and is a half ton so the 67 could have a T221 as well.

Re: 1967 transfer cases

so, can you shed any light on the adapter between the two in your 69?

can the 221 be swapped from a 465 to a 420 and vice versa?

Re: 1967 transfer cases

All 4x4s in 67 would have had the the T221 transfer case regardless of transmission. I believe the transfer case should be an easy swap from the SM420 to the SM465 as the 221 was used behind both..the 67-68 used the 420 and the 465 started in 69. The NP205 can also be swapped in place of the T221 fairly easy. I dont know about the swap from a 2wd SM420 to a 3 speed equipped T221..that may require a lot of part sourcing. Another option if your really wanting to use a 221 would be find one from behind a 66 and before 4x4..they were divorced and ran behind the 420 making them good for 2wd to 4x4 swaps..or the divorced Dodge NP205 would be another way.

Re: 1967 transfer cases

The output shaft on the 2wd 420 is a little different, or it was in my case anyway. On the 4wd, the output shaft has a snap ring groove cut into it, to hold the shaft in the trans case. The 2wd doesnt have this groove. When I rebuilt my 420, I had to mill a groove for the snap ring into the shaft, because I got a 2wd shaft. On 2wd, I think the bearing retainer and yolk hold the shaft from having to much runnout. In my research, the 420 to 221 adapter has a built i bearing retainer, but it allows too much runnout without the snapring and causes the internals to fail.

Just another thing to look at

Re: 1967 transfer cases

I would find a tranny/transfer case combo from a 71 or 72 and pull the driveshafts too...

The rockwell is expensive to rebuild and parts are a little harder to find. NP205's can be found all day for $100, $200ish with a tranny hooked up.

Re: 1967 transfer cases

I will revive this thread and say a few words about a recent swap I did.

The 1967 SM420 and T221 are UNIQUE to one year. I have a 1967 K20 with 100% stock drivetrain. Upon pulling the engine to rebuild it, I noticed oil in the bell housing, to be sure it was engine, not transmission related, I decided to pull the trans and t-case to inspect/ seal up. Also the 4th gear syncros were shot on the 420. This led to finding the output shaft on the 420 and input shaft on the T221 badly worn. These are now obsolete as I could not find parts to fix them (they are rare).

I was able to find a 1968 K20 setup- shafts, SM465, and rockwell and bellhousing. For comparisons:

SM420 is shorter 10'' not 12''
420 bellhousing is the same depth, but is different and required for a 465 swap
T221 N1 2/67-0441 is LONGER than T221 N7 1968 by 2in. The tcase to trans couple that is the longer part-see pic.

This means that a 67 with a SBC that is positioned in the stock spot will work with the parts (SM465) from a 68 4x4 without drive shaft modification (use either, I used 1967 driveshafts)

Additional considerations:

The highhump trans cover is different 67-68. Source a 1968 or modify (i.e. sawzall) the 1967. This because the 'stick' is further back and the 1968 T221 is shifted differently. On that note, does anyone have a 1968 4x4 highhump they would like to sell before I get out the sawzall?

Onward,

Paul
