Should I buy this?

I was looking for some parts for my 68 and ran across this truck. It does not have a title but the owner referred me to a title company here in tx. Both the owner and title company say that it will be no problem getting a title. I thought about buying it for parts.

The truck has original paint, and the bed and front clip are in good shape. The doors open and close easily. It appears mostly complete including 3 of 4 hubcaps. The owner says that it has 51k miles on it.

The cab is a non-ac cab and has the usual rust in the rockers, cab floor near the rockers and cab corners. The motor and transmission are both missing. The bench seat cover and foam is in poor condition.

I think that it will make a great parts truck but I also think it would be cool to replace the motor and transmission, fix the rust, put some wheels and tires on, and drive the heck out of it.

What do you guys think?

Re: Should I buy this?

Buy it with the parts prices in mind then get it home and try for a title BUT don't spend a dime on it until you get the title in your hand. Don't ask me how I know this. I know for some it is hard to get one and not tear into it. but just wait to avoid COSTLY mistakes. once the title comes in go nuts and do whatever and that way if you don't get paper you can still part it but if you do then you can build it.

I think the original engine was a 327. Is this correct?

Re: Should I buy this?

I think it might have originally been a 250. If it was a V-8, I think that would be on the SPID, as that was an optional engine choice.

Re: Should I buy this?

If I decoded the model number correctly it was a v-8 truck. I just don't know what v-8's they used in '68.

Re: Should I buy this?

I'd get it if the price is right. hugger6933 has great advice above.

The second digit of the vin is an E. That means it is a V8 truck...

Does it still have the engine stands in it? I'd guess it was a base small block was it 307 or 327 in 68? Someone will know. If it was a big block it would be on the SPID beacause it would be an option.

Re: Should I buy this?

I'm guessing 307. If it were a 327 truck it would be on the Spid anything other than the bottom line truck it gets recorded on that label. If it isn't on there it didn't have it from the factory. Nobody there at the General threw stuff in just cause it looked cool or they thought it would be fun. It has to be written on that label or they didn't install it.

I' m with hugger6933. Buy it. Get a title, the original drivetrain is gone. Be a good LS build!

I went ahead and bought it even though it wasn't quite as good as the guy described ( I guess they never are).

Re: Should I buy this?

Looks like a decent start. It's about the shape the truck in my profile was in when I bought it five years and $20k ago!

As stated above the second digit "E" (eight) denotes a v8 truck. ("S" denotes six cylinder.) In my e,experience swab stepside trucks originally equipped with a v8 are a little more rare and could possibly bring a little more money to the right person.

Bought a 62 Mercury comet a few years ago with no title, Bill of sale only. It cost me around $500additional to get a bonded title.

On a related note, I always chuckle at capitalist ads that say "no title but can get o e with no trouble". If that's the case why didn't they get the title?

We called the title company together on speaker. Ran the vin and plates with no hits in the database. The title company said it would be no problem getting a bonded title for $500.

I would be interested in that Radio Delete plate if you don't plan on keeping it.
Very cool truck!
