Best price on GM crate engines?

I know it has been mentioned on here that the best place to order a GM crate engine is through one particular dealer. However I didn't pay that much attention at the time because I wasn't looking to purchase an engine. Now my brother is asking about one for his truck, so if anyone could help me out with that dealer name it would be greatly appreciated

I seem to recall these folks.

Still you should probebly decide what you want, check out jegs, summit, speedway, the internet, etc.

Re: Best price on GM crate engines?

^ yep, seems Scoggin Dickey was THE place to order crate engines but I got some good quotes from Gandrud

https://www.gmperformancemotor.com/category/ENG.html

haven't pulled the trigger but I've been eyegrinding those HT383 models

whatever you're looking for, always worth a mention to a sales person you're shopping for best price and ask what they can do to win your business..

good luck!

Thanks but it's not for me. My brother needs an engine for his 89 K2500 & I had mentioned to him that GM had a crate engine meant to be a direct replacement for the K code engine in those trucks & that there was a particular dealer to order through to get the best deal. Thanks again for the info I'll pass it on to him

And who sells X part is changed how by whether it's for you or your brother?
If it was me I'd be looking for a reputable rebuilder.

I was just saying it's not for me to decide anything, my brother's the one who needs an engine.

I too would rather have a local rebuilder than a crate motor

Re: Best price on GM crate engines?

i used to buy all mine through JEGS then lastmonth my son had an issue and needed a motor for his 89 Blazer. Ordered it through JEGS and they said it would ship monday.. a week went by and no motor call them and they give me the crap about covid and they were at least two weeks out with manufacture.. told em to stick it.. went to Summit and they had 10 available they sent one but they charge a core and the shipping return they give you a hard time with so youre going to eat the core charge of $285... Around thanksgiving i sent my wifes 350 for her truck in for a rebuild and just got that back a week ago , so im pretty well disgusted with the engine rebuilder trade at this point just dont go through JEGS

So both of you would have a problem with a brand new engine from GM? Would you please enlighten me why?

My experience with that has been, that way you don't have to worry about a warranty cause there wont be any.
Just funnin, I'm sure there are reputable builders out there...

Re: Best price on GM crate engines?

You may have purchased already, I know the post is a few weeks old.

Be careful with the GM crate engines. I bought one a few years ago, it was the 290hp version of the GMPP 350 long block. It was ~ok~ on power, sounded descent etc. I put it in a 69 Camaro. Did the proper break in procedures, I've done a thousand times.

About 500 miles in, it developed a heavy white smoke out of the pass side exhaust. Startup only at first but it got progressively worse. I started to investigate a little more and found every valve seal on that side was chewed up pretty bad. As it turned out, that head had valve seals for a 4.3v6. It was an error in the build process, yes.. but Summit / GMPP wouldnt warranty it. The warranty they advertise with these engines only applies if it was installed by an ASE Certified master mechanic. Well.. I'm not. But I can build a small block in my sleep.

Doesnt matter. I'll never buy another one. My suggestion would be to go with a local builder or Jasper, etc. The GM Crates are ok I probably just got a bad one. It happens I get it.. but the warranty side of things gave me a bit of a bad taste in the future. Hope this helps.

Re: Best price on GM crate engines?

I'm hoping to buy one next week. Whatever is gathering dust on the shelf, I am just looking for a good small block with a warranty.

It really seems like most peoples problems are with the supplier. Its a good thing to consider. I will be buying from a local shop that will warranty it if they put it in.

Re: Best price on GM crate engines?

Might want to check with your local dealer. While their parts prices here can be list or over. I was surprised at the crate prices. As far as the warranty. As I read it, the warranty is the same for installed or over the counter. It does state that repairs on over the counter purchase must be done at an approved location. Maybe I am not looking at the right document but I did not find anything that says motor must be installed by an approved location.
