3/4 ton to 1/2 5 lug conversion

Since my truck is the 8 lug wheel setup and would like the more popular 5 lug can I simply buy a kit?

All the kits I see for sale state only for 1/2 ton trucks? Are there some kits for the C20 that would fit and have the drop or stock spindles for my truck?

Thanks

Re: 3/4 ton to 1/2 5 lug conversion

Early Classic Enterprises did a conversion on a C-20, to C-10 equivalency that was documented in Classic Trucks magazine. Check out their website and see what they have. Since all C-20's are long wheel base, they also cut a foot out of the frame (you wouldn't have to) and built a short bed for it (they sell all the stuff they used). www.earlyclassic.com

Thanks ChevLoRay. I used to live right down the road from you in a small town called Malvern.

Thanks for your help.

Press a 88-94 3/4 ton ball joint into your lower arm and install 88-94 1/2 ton upeer ball joints in a 67-72 upeer arm and us a 1.25 " spindle from a 88-94 1/ ton . Look at this FAQ thread . You have the hard to find part which is the lower control arm .

I think that should read 1/2 ton right? Of course I may be the only one who read it as 1 ton.

Yes I am hoping

is meant to be 1/2 ton.

Other than that I appreciate your help. Sounds like a lot of work to get it converted but cheaper than any kits I am guessing too.

Re: 3/4 ton to 1/2 5 lug conversion

All of this makes sense after reading the other post, but what I might be missing is, will a 1/2 ton 88 and up upper ball joint bolt into a 3/4 ton upper control arm from a 67? Lots of discussion about the lower arm and BJ, nothing that I could find about the upper.

Just for clarification, I'd like to go from a 3/4 ton 8 lug drum to 5 or 6 lug disc.

Just wanted to know before I raid the local salvage yard this weekend.

Thanks,

Dave

Re: 3/4 ton to 1/2 5 lug conversion

We just swapped out all the suspension off the '68 1/2 ton frame to my 3/4 ton frame.

I guess that it helped that we had a donor 1/2 ton truck we got for doing some supension work on a guy's '72.

It was not that difficult and did not take too long, now I have 6 lug instead of 8 lug.

The same thing can be done by using a donor truck with a 5 lug setup as a donor I am sure as long as it has the same spring setup.

Question Re: 3/4 ton to 1/2 5 lug conversion

So to do this correctly (I have a 12-bolt 5x5 bolt pattern rear axle) I would need to replace the whole front-end is that correct?

Re: 3/4 ton to 1/2 5 lug conversion

All the steering and everything from the a-arms out will get the job done if you have a donor truck for parts.
NO need to change the crossmember itself.

I have no idea about the '88 up stuff.
I really question whether the geometry of the later body style trucks is the same as the 63-87 trucks.
I know it will bolt together,... but does it work correctly on the older trucks.

To me,... using the 71-87 parts is the easiest.

yes.
The 88-91 'burbs have the same suspension as the 73-87 trucks.

Re: 3/4 ton to 1/2 5 lug conversion

so what is being said here is if i take the control arms and steering components off my 1975 C10 they will bolt on my 1970 C20 with no modifications? then i end up with 5 lug disc brakes instead of 8 lug drum brakes!
