Re: L59 fuel question

Cannot reuse head bolts on these motors. They are one time use, torque to yield, stretch fasteners. Same for the crank snout/balancer...

Re: L59 fuel question

but you can pull a spark plug and shine a flashlight in the hole to see if the top of the piston is flat or dished. Flat is 5.3, dished is 4.8.

Re: L59 fuel question

I can't see anything but black when I put the light in the spark plug hole. Spent a few hours putting the engine on the frame and ...

found this today

Is this is the tab you mentioned before?

I think I am going to call the guy tomorrow and talk to him. Things are not adding up. I will tell him I will be pulling the head to see if it is a 4.8 or 5.3. The computer came back as a 2006 tahoe with a 4.8 that was salvaged, which he says he just pulled off the shelf, and the vin he gave me was for a 2006 Tahoe, but the mileage did not match what he said. He said it was just under 58k and the vin says last reqistered in Ohio at 23k, nothing about a salvage.

Re: L59 fuel question

Does this look like a windage tray from a truck that had 23 or 58k miles on it? Pulled the pan, windage and pickup to put a LS1 pan on.

Re: L59 fuel question

I haven't seen a motor that the head gaskets were wrong. No tabs or not stamped, yes. What numbers can you find on the crank? Those will tell what you have for sure.

At this point just call the guy, even if it MIGHT be what you thought you wanted....sounds like he isn't the most legit guy anyway.

Do you have a pic of one stamped 5.3? I checked 4 of mine and they all say 4.8, but I know the truck that at least one of them came out of was a 5.3.

Nope, Let me rephrase. I have not personally seen one that was stamped wrong.

Re: L59 fuel question

I was just thinking that since a 4.8 and 5.3 use the same block and bore size that the head gaskets would be the same also.

Re: L59 fuel question

Talked to the guy today and he says it is a 5.3 to pull the head and see. Says he does not have a 4.8 in the yard... Got to figure out how to start this thing b4 I pull the heads. Where can I get one of those starter buttons to hook up to this? I am pretty much ready to fire it up, make sure it runs then I can pull the head.

Harness was rewired, PCM was flashed (will need a crank relearn).

According the the crank #'s it is a 5.3, so I am not pulling the heads quite yet. I don't want to spend the cash on the gaskets and bolts if I don't have to.
12552216 are the #'s I see.

They have both 4.8 and 5.3 cast into them because they use the same block, and as mentioned earlier there is usually a white paint mark on which ever one it is.

Never was able to get the true mileage on the motor. I have about 200miles on it now. There are always the little things you have left, but the swap is complete for now.

I have to say I would do it again on my next project. This motor runs circles around the old tired 305 that was in it. I couldn't have done it without all the help from this forum though. Thanks! I learned a lot on this one.

I built it as my project, to see if i could do it on my own.it's not my daily driver. The bench seat won't fit my family.
