Re: My side marker light fuel filler idea

Anyone tried one of these? Just ordered one yesterday, thought it might make it easier than removing the small cap from inside of the marker light area.

I don't think that will fit without cutting into the bed. It's pretty tight in the pocket, I think it measures around 2".

I think your right, I have a setup similar to yours but its hard to get the filler nozzle in without overflowing or touching the marker light sheet metal edges. I'll probably modify the inside of the bed if needed. Your setup looks a lot cleaner than mine! Great job and write up.

Re: My side marker light fuel filler idea

I am working on the same modification for my 69' step side. I am using a capless filler system that you can fined on 08' through 14' ford cars. Also Slant offers replacment capless filler caps that will fit any fill neck. My hand was to big to pull a cap off and on in this small space. I will be hitting the salvage yards for the door hing and fill neck bezel that can bolt on to the existing light box. I may be expecting to cut the inner light box to have the filler neck fit.

I like the hing you used. I have looked at this and was wondering if this would close and open with the clearance needed. Looks easy to install

Re: My side marker light fuel filler idea

Quick update. I swapped out my tank (again....) and while I had it out, I replaced the 1.75" filler neck with a 2" filler neck because the other one would occasionally burp fuel depending on the gas station I used. So far the 2" neck appears to provide more flow and quicker fills.

Re: My side marker light fuel filler idea

Thanks for the link Rob. I sure thought I saw this modification somewhere in the past. I am planning on doing the same. One problem I can see already, my truck has a blazer tank. It's only got a 1-1/2" dia. opening so even if I had 2" pipe it will reduce the flow at the tank.

It would still work, but you'll have to be patient at the pump.....

Re: My side marker light fuel filler idea

You could add a vent tube from the tank back up to the top area of the filler and it will help with the burping.

My filler was out of an 88 S10, it has a vent tube integrated into it. But don't know if your tank has a vent fitting.

The tank is vented.

Re: My side marker light fuel filler idea

I am looking to get a rear tank for my '72. Probably going to get the brothers one which has a 1 3/8" filler neck so I will need to be patient as well.

I have been thinking of doing a sidemarker fill since I don't want to cut into the bed of my truck either and it is lined as well. My initial thought was to just cut out a hold on the side of the rear panel but if I can make the sidemarker fill work then it would be a lot cleaner.

Re: My side marker light fuel filler idea

So im starting to gather parts for this.

wanted to know if you turned down the filler flange...

this one has a 3" flange, but the picture on page one suggests that the flange is just over 2".

http://www.westmarine.com/whitecap--...06_209_001_500

did you modify the filler cap/flange in any way?

thanks!

You could probably use a 2" adapter on the tank neck to help with the flow.

I had the flange machined down.

Re: My side marker light fuel filler idea

I intend on using a Permacap from Kleen Wheels. The only issue is that the Permacap is compatible with only screw type filler necks. Fairly inexpensive at 15.25 plus shipping. Ordered one this week, waiting for delivery.

Here is the link.

https://www.kleenwheels.com/vmchk/Pe...rmacap-PC24001

I have a 1970 SWB and am using the filler neck, etc. from a 96 S10 to fill through the side marker.

Re: My side marker light fuel filler idea

Well I decided to go with the boyd side fill tank. It has a 2" fill neck so won't need an adapter. Will update on my progress. Thanks.

Using the cabinet hinge is the side marker still functional as a light?

How did you secure the C-Channel to the bed on the inner and outer sides?

Re: My side marker light fuel filler idea

I have a successful setup for a hidden fuel fill neck. The parts include a late model fuel door from a Chevy or GMC suburban or truch. The two mounting holes will need to be adjusted in closer. This will allow the tow mounting screws to be behind the side marker. No welding required. The next is the fuel neck. The way to go is using a Ford F150 08 or later fuel neck. This is a capless system and will make it easier to fill without the hassle of a cap. The F150 has the right length of pipe and an overflow tub which connects well with the new tank. Just need a 4 inch fuel hose and clamps. Name: image.jpg

Re: My side marker light fuel filler idea

My photo is upside down. I fastened the fuel door to the front and drilled two holes by the inside marker light. The step side has a inner housing which will hold the fuel neck. For fleet side I found another option Still checkingName: image.jpg
