Project NOT4SLE

I am starting a build thread on the 72 truck I bought to be a daily driver. It is a SWB truck with PS, PB, and AC. It is in relative good shape with minimal rust on the drivers side floor board. NNo holes through the metal though.
Initially the Water pump was bad, it had no thermostat, and it leaks a little oil from the transmission somewhere.
I replaced the thermostat and housing, the water pump and was going to rebuild the Rochester carb until I found out it was for a 69 427 corvette which will still fetch a good amount of money on ebay. So I am dumping it on Ebay and bought a new Summit 600CFM carb, intake and filter.

Plans for this truck are a 4/6 drop, 20" Coys, 295/40-20 rear tires and 255/40-20 front Toyo tires.
Down the road it will also get a nice motor built, interior done, and then a final paintjob. I have not decided on a color as of yet but it is leaning towards a silver/black/red paint job.

Of course the name on the project is what I ordered when I registered it.

On to the pics,

Re: Project NOT4SLE

This is what the thermostat looked like when I got it

Got the thermostat and water pump replaced and moved on to this carb,

Me working on it a bit

This is the New Summit 600CFM carb and intake going on the truck now

Next up will hopefully to get it all installed tomorrow, check its running condition and get to the tranny leak so I can get to driving this thing.

I do need to figure out what size bolts are used for the seat mounting bolts as the seat has none. anyone know?

Re: Project NOT4SLE

Finally got a break to work ont he truck some more. Cannot wait to get this thing on the road and it is still a beater. Who knows what will happen when it is lowered with wheels and almost ready to come off jackstands again. LOL

Finished pulling the OEM intake manifold off, cleaned up the gasket surface, marked the DIst but washed off my marks Ill have to learn to time it too then.
Tomorrow I am hoping to get the Manifold and distributor back on before I have to go to work.

Paint wont be for awhile. i would wear the weathered paint but I am going to do a 67-68 front clip on it which would mean the front fenders already wont match.

Re: Project NOT4SLE

I have been working late nights and not getting up till noon so my days of working on the truck are non existent as it is already well into the 100s by noon around here. Had the evening off last night and got up and worked on the truck a bit. Till I realized I needed a couple new bolts for the intake to mount the AC brackets.

What is everyone doing with factory valve covers to get rid of the extra holes when going to an aftermarket carb set up? I have the tube off the manifold which I guess I can just remove, then two holes on the driver valve cover. One I can get a plug type cap for and the other what should I use?

Re: Project NOT4SLE

I installed all the gaskets after finishing cleaning off the mating surface, and got some sealant on the front and rear seals and installed the gaskets.

The bracket holding the throttle cable to the manifold had to be modified a bit. I clearanced out the side a bit on the inside edge of the back of the bracket. The manifold is square back there which I am sure is like this on the edelbrock as well.

Re: Project NOT4SLE

I finally got around to installing the carb on the truck and was going ot get everything dialed in to get it running however i ran in to another snag.

I figured out my brake booster issue as the carb has a fitting on the rear of the carb, I did however run in to a fuel line issue.
The double feed line is hitting my AC brackets. A simple fix would be to bend it at a 45* angle to clear the bracket.

What does everything think?

I did get a breather for my valve covers as well as one containing a PCV valve for the other valve cover. I just need to figure out the oil filler problems now.

So i finished putting my air filter on and called it a day.

Re: Project NOT4SLE

I think i would go with a 1" or 2" phenolic carb spacer and that should get you above the AC bracket. I would go this route before bending the carb fuel line.

what oil filler problem you referring too?
