One day when I grow up.... Truck looks amazing, and I may just have to "borrow" that filler setup idea for mine.

Mike,

Have you been putting some miles on the truck? How's the LS working for you? Looks great buddy!

Thanks Jason. Unfortunately, I haven't put very many miles on it. I'm working through some problems on my rear end. It was an old used 2:72 from a mid 70s truck. I installed a set of 3:73 gears in it from a donor 68 I had in my parts stash.
Apparently, I didn't get everything perfect so there was a howl noise when coasting.
I took everything back apart last night and am going to try to set again tonight. Hope to be back on the road soon.
I will get some pictures of the progress.

Re: 1969 Short Wide

Looking forward to this update because I've got this in front of me too. I know you'll show us the right way and some trick way to do it! What set did you have running in the video?

I don't know about any tricks or the right way . I have really struggled with this rear end project. It's not as straight forward as I had hoped. I have had the pinion and gear carrier in and out at least 10 times trying to get the pattern right. There seems to be some black magic to installing them. This is exactly why it costs so much to have a new set installed.

As for the video, I was running the stock 2:73 gears. I know I like the way the 3:73 gears pull much better, I just couldn't deal with the howling noise.

Re: 1969 Short Wide

Mike your pinion depth is too shallow. You need to get it moved deeper into the mesh.

I have done hundreds of rear ends and I can tell you that when I first started doing them it was a lot of trial and error. The biggest thing is to not get frustrated and just take your time.

Luckily I was young and in a dealer when I was learning and was shown some of the tricks to make pinion shim corrections quickly.

Another big thing when checking your patter is to make sure you have some drag on the unit. This will ensure you get a good read every time.

Let me know if you have any questions, I am sure I can help you out. I am swapping in a new 3:42 and posi currently in a 12 bolt this weekend.

Thanks Boostedc10. The pics are from when I first started adjusting the gears. I have since moved the pinion deeper but I am still having trouble getting a nice pattern. It seems that the edge is very sharp, almost as though the pinion contact is out of time? Anyway, I'd love to get your contact info. I have been fighting with this thing for what seems like 40+ hours. I have gotten so frustrated a few times I just called it a day early.
If you don't mind me pestering you about the setup send me a pm.
Thanks.
You have an awesome project going yourself. BTW I think 3:42 would be better choice for my setup but I had the 3:73s already so I figured I'd give them a try.

Sorry to hear about the rear end problems. But you will get it soon. It makes the signature line even more real "Built not bought". Another story to add to the truck.

It's all good Dwight. I knew it was a possibility back when I installed the rear end in 2010. It had a lot of slack, I just didn't know it was that bad .
I have it back together and on the road again. I am now confident I can set up my new posi when I get to that point.

I wanted to say thanks to Mark (Crash_OK) for helping me pull an extra rear end I had in a 68 chassis my stash. It was in a tight spot and I couldn't have gotten it out without your help.

I also had a bunch of help setting up the gears from member boostedc10 (Thanks Brandon!).

I'm glad to have it back on the road too. I am taking it to alignment shop this week. I will definitely be driving it some too. Count on it.
