Re: "Project Orangepeel" 52 A.D

Update!!!

I had an Idea for awhile for a rear bumper.
I picked up a 55 chevy car bumper to use and it's really crusty but will work.

Pic #1. Here I am removing the rivets from the stock mounts.

Pic #2. Another view..

Pic #3. This is the center section and taking it all apart..(nice and rusty..)

Pic #4. The drivers side being cut ( in total there was 3" removed from each corner unit) To get the bumper to fit as I needed..

Pic #1. Is the first look after I made the first cuts 1 1?2" removed. (I went back and removed the remaining 1 1/2 later)
you can also see how crusty it was...

Pic #2. After some grinder work..(I used a paint stripping wheel to get it this far)

Pic #3. Getting the pieces prepped for welding.

Pic #4. First look after welding was done...

Till next time

Re: "Project Orangepeel" 52 A.D

Mark,
I didn't say I find it ugly, just that I have to get used to it, don't get me wrong

If I see it in the whole picture of the truck, I may say, Man that's fantastic!!

We build trucks for our own pleasure, thats a good thing, if else we all had the same truck, that's just boring!!
That said: I like what you are doing!!

Re: "Project Orangepeel" 52 A.D

I like the idea. I wonder if the ends of the bumper or tips were a bit shorter and the angle changed a bit if it wouldn't look more stock looking. Looks great. You've got some killer ideas.

Re: "Project Orangepeel" 52 A.D

RockinKees. I didnt take it as you found it Ugly lol..
I was was just saying in general that everyone has different views and opinions and that is what makes all our vehicles unique.
My goal was to have something different than just stock everything and change paint and wheels. I did want the Wow factor whether it was good or bad, someone will still go "WOW did you see that"
Thank's for the input it is always welcome...

Mark..

Re: "Project Orangepeel" 52 A.D

Rusty...I did kick around some ideas like that but it came down to time.
I needed to get my truck moved back to the basement and the other project moved back up to the shop to get back to work on it.
I will finish getting the pics posted so everyone can see the final look of it.

Mark..

Re: "Project Orangepeel" 52 A.D

Update...

Pic #1. My idea for the mounting system is a bit outside the box..
Here is the 1st part of the mount. (A simple tube and sleeve unit) This sleeve will get welded into the end of the frame (mine is 2x4 boxed at the end) and will slide inside the frame and get welded.

Pic #2. here is a shot of the frame End. I have drilled 2 holes for side and bottom plug welds to secure the sleeves.

Pic #3. Here you get a better idea of what I'm doing.
The sleeve is inside the frame and the Tube you see on the right goes to the cross bar that spans the width of the bumper ( sorry no pic of the cross bar installed ) So the extension tubes from the frame go to the cross bar and are all welded together. Then I made Tabs that are welded to the cross tube so the bumper can be bolted to the tabs.

Pic #4. This is the pan layout with poster board.

Pic #5. The first look with metal (used 20g for this as it needed to be able to curve in some places)

Re: "Project Orangepeel" 52 A.D

I'm glad we're on the same level Mark

I didn't know you're closing it up, probably didn''t understand that part...
The more I look at it the more I like it.
Eyes and brains do strange things sometimes

Looking forward to the finished piece!!
Also, the bumper mount is some great enginering!!

That looks good with splash aprons added. Really help tie things together.
