Well, I waited and I found it. It's a 72' Chevy Custom Deluxe factory 4x4.
Montana truck from new till around 92'. Everything was rebuilt. 350/350 Automatic, Posi rear, Tilt, Tach (no A/C though....but not for long!)

What do you guys think?

Thanks. It's great to have "an old truck" to drive again!
It came with the factory rear A/C unit to install, and I have to find a front unit now. People suggested a Vintage-Air Unit to install. I'm not sure. It was kept all original (even the push button radio (?) ) so it might be nice to keep the A/C looking completely factory installed. What I dont know is actually how good the original A/C systems were back then. I hear the Vintage-Air type systems have been perfected, and work beautiful in these trucks.
Anybody have any experience with this?

Very nice! I love the white below the trim. I plan to add that when I paint mine. The only thing I'd add on the exterior is the trim below the windows (I'm kinda partial to it). Congrats on an excellent purchase.

If convienient sometime I would like to see closeup paint picture where white top meets body color at rear corners. This is often where the upper belt mouldings resided on 2 tones. I tried once to maska line and failed. Would like to see how it is done when right. What state did you find it in?

They sure look great all gussied up.

I've never made a side by side comparison, but I've heard that the original A/C system on R12 beats all the aftermarket systems in cooling temps. The aftermarket units have better fans, but I wouldn't be surprised to discover that replacement oem motors are also upgrades. AFAIK, all the aftermarket dash units draw A/C air (not heat) from only inside the cab.

If you go aftermarket R134, be sure that whatever they sell you can handle the rear unit, too. For instance, the condenser might have to be larger. I don't know for sure, though. Just postulating. I'll be returning my C10 burb's A/C to factory refreshed on R12 since it is complete.

A complete oem 72 CK A/C system meticulously removed went for ~$500 on ebay earlier this year. I can't remember if that came with roof air. Probably not. Get a copy of Classic Industries catalog. They have great pics of most of the serviced A/C parts on 71/72 trucks. Not great prices, though.

BTW, does the truck have an A/C dash?

The Burb came out of Seattle. The fellow has had several of this era Chevy trucks over the years. He did a amature body off on it and rebuilt everything.
He towed other trucks he was restoring on a double axle trailer with it, prior to restoring it. He used a "beater" for towing after that. He was starting a 54 Convertible restoration project, and had no room, and didnt want to put it outside, so he decided to pass it on as they say. He never installed A/C as he really didnt need it in seattle. But he wanted to do it at some point, that's why he picked up the complete rear unit when he found one.

I like the white on the bottom too. (it's also practical, incase a rust spot developes on the bottom, it can be fixed more easily.)The last owner was torn between installing (adding actually) top belt molding on it as well. He likes it but didnt want to start drilling holes everywhere.

Thanks for all the A/C info. The Burbs sure have a lot of cubic-feet to cool off, so it has to be done right. I will get that Catalog for sure. Thanks!

The truck does not have an A/C dash. (swivel "eyeball" type vents)

Question: was the rear A/C ever installed as the ONLY A/C UNIT in these Suburbans?

Two-Tone Paint Trick: Masking a paint line and having it "bleed" underneath can be a pain. Years back I worked for a custom paint shop, and what we did was to thumb-nail down the "fine-line brand tape" right before spraying it, But we would first spray it with Clear, and then spray it with the color afterwards. If anthing seeped under the tape, it was only the Clear. The Clearcoat can't be seen.

My K20 burb has the top belt molding. The mounting hardware holes let in water when it rains or goes thru a carwash. The holes let in water when it rains because of the slope of the body. It's not 90º vertical there. If I ever restore the truck, I suppose I could add sealant to the holes.
Also, the molding doesn't fit closely, so it lets water pass beneath it. It does do a good job of collecting small leaves, though.

Nice tip!

I don't care 100% about factory appearance, so I'm painting my current project burb using the factory roof seam so I don't have to have a paint line down lower on the D-pillar.

The front/rear ac set up is a 72 only option.I have seen 72 suburbans that had the front only,but never just the rear.I have a 1971 that I converted to r134a.It cools just as good as my 72 that is r12.The only thing that does not look factory on my 71 is the pressure switch.67-71 had a tunnel running the length of the roof.

Very nice truck. As far as the upper trim is concerned, I agree with 4x4 poet, it is a pain. When I had my Burb painted, I removed the upper and lower trim and had the shop mig weld all the holes (there are a ton). I replaced the lower trim with the newer style Silverado-type that is self-adhesive and cut to fit. I have the same two-tone paint scheme (upper and lower white), and I think it looks great--and now I don't have to worry about all the water that used to find its way inside!

I have the self-adhesive lower trim that grebus1 is refering to on my burb also. I agree with not putting extra holes in the body.

Hey Long Roof, what's the story on the missing exterior handle on the 3rd door? Also, what type of exterior mirrors are those--are they stock for your year Burb? Mine currently has the sport mirrors (like NOSguy has on his), but I can't see for @#$! out of them!

The rear door handle was filled by the previous owner. I'm still undecided if I like it. It has no power solinoid so you have to reach in from the front door to open it. It does however match the driver side in looks.

The mirrors are factory. You can see much more than the sport mirrors but they tend to vibrate with only the one arm holding the mirror head.
