dash speaker 1964-1966 - mounting tips?

Howdy folks.

I bought an aftermarket speaker that is designed to fit into the same stock hole on the dash in my 1965 C10.

Do any of you have any tips or suggestions about putting a speaker in that location or taking it out?

Going from memory, they just wedge in place on the front side and (I think) the rear mounts off a stud on the back of the radio. Been a couple years since I did it though. I do remember that the wedge fit was loose and it rattled so I had to pad the edges for a tighter fit.

Also, you'll want to borrow a kid that can fit up under the dash easier unless you're a contortionist!

Astronaut said it best. It's all about making sure that it gets wedged back in the same way. I ended up putting a small piece of rolled over duct tape (sticky side out) over the original rubber "nub" so that it would stay in place better once wedged back in the depression in the dash.

I went with the Custom Autosound speaker setup and their measurements didn't exactly match the original speaker. Unfortunately, there was a lot of time between my remove and the install and I had thrown the original away. If I had it to do over, I would have just used the original as a template, removed the speaker component and mounted two 3.5" speakers to it and reinstalled.

Also, during the process, my original defrost duct hoses fell apart so I ended up having to replace those. It's pretty tight up in there behind the heater controls and with the ducting.

Mine has a couple of smaller speakers up there in place of the factory one, but I didn't put it there. I could get a pic or two from the underside if you like.

I've seen where folks took the old stock speaker and cut it down & added two speakers... I was keen to do that, but I do not have a old speaker to use.

I know one online truck fella actually made a template and shared the measurements with everyone like a metal fabrication blueprint level design. I swore I saved it, but I can not find it in my truck related computer files, so must have been on a past crash.

My experence also.....I need an orginal speaker to go back orginal mounting

I'm assuming you know the vendors offer a dual speaker designed to mount in the original location.

This is why I should have gone orginal.....doesent fit good....sound isnt good either

Good to know. I don't know what's in mine as I didn't put it in there but it doesn't sound great. I just figured they were cheap speakers.

I picked up this speaker from S&M Electro-Tech http://www.turnswitch.com/speakers.htm but haven't installed it, or a radio, yet. I think I have all the brackets I need but don't know how its all supposed to mount under the dash.

I know it'd be painful to snap a pic, but would be a big help if anyone has an underdash pic of the speaker/radio mounted?

Well folks, I poked around under there looking around today.

Not sure how this contraption installs at all.

Looking like I might need to wiggle the inside of the heater out of the way... but I still do not see how or what it mounts too.

Anyone have any photos of the original speaker bracket ?

1. Take the defrost hose off the D/S sit it out of the Way on a table or some thing
2. Remove wiper motor (& washer pump assy if eq'd)
3. Look at the speaker (if OEM brackets are present) the rubber bumper covered bracket goes in the highest internal bend ( as you are look up under the dash), this bend is on the dash, not the firewall. That rubber covered bracket goes there.
4. The opposite side of the speaker, diagonal for the rubber one, goes up to a hole in the dash where the dahs and firewall pinch welds are. If your windshield. Is in the seal will be kind of hidding the hole.
Note: get a flash light and look very closely at the top, center area of your dash. There are two tiny holes about 6" apart. You will have to find the right (passenger side) hole and be able to get at it bacau we that hole is where your only mounting screw that holds the speaker in, is located. Find a screw that will screw into this hole loosely and that will fit yor clip nut on your bracket ( mounted on the speaker).
I hope you understand these instructions!!! Ha!
This is how to do the OEM speaker, or an OEM speaker that has been cut And mounted w/2 speakers.
Not sure how to do the aftermarket dual speaker, I don't know what brackets come with it to help you.
PUT everything back after you get the speaker in there nice and tight!!

Yeah I flipped through my 60-66 assembly manual earlier marking anything and everything to do with the speakers and the dash speaker hole with post it notes.

BLK65K10 sent me some photos of the different setups... trying to figure out which configuration is for what year. Mine is a '65 and I am not using the stock radio... so the one with the arm from radio to speaker is out.

Thanks to aerotruk63 and BLK65K10, I found out that little rubber piece that goes onto the speaker is :

3838128 (NOS GM Part number)

cushion, mounting plate <- that is what it is referred to/called.

----

Now, I just need to find one.... HMMNNN.

I've buzzed around a few vendors sites that deal in the NOS parts, nothing listed yet.

That last picture is the exact same speaker I bought from Brothers.

I have a 64 and it never had a radio in it and I have no clue how this speaker is supposed to mount under the dash.

Woogeroo, I bought the same speaker you did from Custom Autosound. I haven't figured out how to mount mine either (I have a '66 GMC), but this website is great! What a bunch of friends here trying to help!

i bought the same thing and changed out the speakers a few months ago. i installed cups made for speakers to the back and then i pilled on the Fat Mat so it has the bracket to hold it up on one side and the Fat Mat is holding it all in place also the Fat Mat makes find of an enclosure for the speakers. sounds really good with just 60 watts going to each speaker.

I know old post, but did original poster ever figure it out? I have same speaker and a 1965 C10. never had a radio or speakers.
