I haven't seen a motor that the head gaskets were wrong. No tabs or not stamped, yes. What numbers can you find on the crank? Those will tell what you have for sure.

Do you have a pic of one stamped 5.3? I checked 4 of mine and they all say 4.8, but I know the truck that at least one of them came out of was a 5.3.

Nope, Let me rephrase. I have not personally seen one that was stamped wrong.

I was just thinking that since a 4.8 and 5.3 use the same block and bore size that the head gaskets would be the same also.

According the the crank #'s it is a 5.3, so I am not pulling the heads quite yet. I don't want to spend the cash on the gaskets and bolts if I don't have to.
12552216 are the #'s I see.

....are the blocks not stamped with the displacement on the front cyl, like the 6.0l??

They have both 4.8 and 5.3 cast into them because they use the same block, and as mentioned earlier there is usually a white paint mark on which ever one it is.
