The 1970's parts chase challenge

Let's go back to the joys of chasing clean parts in the 1970's .

You wrecked the front end of your truck when you hit a deer , After checking all the local junk yards nobody had anything , Then your phone rings and it's your buddy telling you he heard of a junk yard filled with good parts , BUT it's in NC 2 states away and he only knows the name of the place . So you makes what seems like hours of calls to the operator ( .10 cents each) and finally get the junk yards # but it's always busy .

Re: The 1970's parts chase challenge

So you decide to make the trip with only a name and number of the place . You grab your stack of road maps and jump into the family vista cruiser to make the trip after waiting a few hours to get in line for gas .

SO your driving 55 mph because thats the law and trying to follow the map while holding your beer bottle and driving somewhat down the road . Always trying to watch for a phone booth and stopping at each one you see to call the yard and get better directions .

After many missed turns , A flat tire , a whole roll of dimes fed into phone booths and your buddy passed out in the back seat , You find the place and it's still open .

Re: The 1970's parts chase challenge

I was VERY fortunate when I was a teenager with my 1970 model. First, the best local yard's phone number was just the reverse two digits of my home phone number so I can still remember it to this day (35 years or so later). Also, the guy that owned the yard was a childhood buddy of my grandfather. They would sit around and jaw while I had free reign to walk around and gather up what I needed and wanted.

Then my dad had a network of swap/traders around that always seemed to have stuff here and there. I remember pulling up to a house of someone I never knew on the word they had a 1971-1972 hood for sale. Sure enough, my intel was correct and I drove off with a pristine hood.

Fun times, really.

Re: The 1970's parts chase challenge

Up until a few years ago there were a lot more salvage "junk" yards that had a fairly good selection of older vehicles....you could crawl around all day looking for what you needed.

When the Chinese started buying up all the scrap metal and paying a premium price....sadly, we saw hundreds of thousands of these vehicles crushed and shredded and sold to the them...

A few years ago......I was at one of the metal scrap yards where I trade sometimes....they had a mountain of ceiling fans piled up and were loading them into overseas containers......glass, blades and all.....

I asked the guy what they were doing....."They're shipping them to China, they buy the entire heap just to get the copper out of the motor windings"....

Re: The 1970's parts chase challenge

Back then it was really a hunt to find parts. Looking through the classified ads and going to swap meets. And crossing your fingers.

But the feeling that you would get when you finally got what you were looking for is priceless. It was like you were a little kid at Christmas.

I remember finding an NOS grille for my 62 Ranchero still in the box at a flea market. My grille was thrashed. The guy wanted five bucks for it. I had butterflies in my stomach and couldn't get that five dollar bill out of my pocket fast enough. It was a rush.

It's ironic...with the popularity of the 67-72 trucks now
He could have made a hell of a lot more money had he hung on to them and parted them out
Oh well...I suppose "a bird in the hand...is worth two in the bush"...
I bet....HuFlungDung turned it into cheap junk and sold it back to us

If I would have had the cash I would have bought the whole bunch. He would have let me keep them there for as long as I wanted.

When you can't find parts with a computer and cell phone remember what we used to have to go though to find them !

In the 1970s you could still go to the dealer and get new parts...

Re: The 1970's parts chase challenge

In 1981 I bid on a 1969 Corvette ragtop and won the bid at Beasley auto salvage. It was a light wreck / front end. Red/ white top and interior. I had planned to buy GM parts to fix it, but soon figured how underwater I was gonna be on it. Then, i dug out a Hemmings and called around and found a front cap, bumpers and all in Rolla MO. 700 bucks and it was Red. Took my Uncle's flatbed and made a 15 hr round trip, made the repair and made money on it. This is easy now, it's just these Chinese parts aren't worth having.

Re: The 1970's parts chase challenge

Back before rust repair panels were offered I would only buy rust free trucks. The welding equipment back then left only brazing with acetylene torches and it was hard to do patches. Most body shops wanted nothing to do with warping up your metal. At first I could find better bodies in Southern VA/NC. Then I had to travel farther south and west to TN/GA/AL. Went from that to TX/KS/CO, and eventually NM/AZ/CA. Going that far to make the trip more worthwhile I started hauling Cabs, doors, and beds back. I can't count how many times I had people telling me I was crazy. Gotta do whatcha gotta do

^^^ Yeah, that Kiwi Classics (or whatever it was called) was the go-to place. Others as well. Lots of Harley for 45 parts down under as well. My good friend has, and has always had, a 1940 and that puts him out of luck for many '41+ 45" parts

Re: The 1970's parts chase challenge

This wasn't the 70's, but about 25 years ago I was gathering parts I needed to restore my K20 and the internet didn't exist (for me anyway). The part that I couldn't find was a long bed stepside fender with the spare tire cut out. I remembered years earlier when I was on a motorcycle trip, seeing a truck in a field in southern Mississippi that had that fender. Not being able to find one locally, I gathered up my tools and my drunk buddies, and we headed south from KY. I was able to located the truck and the owner who was having none of me. Pretty much threw me off his property just for asking about the truck.

Back in the day when I got out of the Army that was the only transportation I had for several years. I've been looking for one and the entry level is around 16K now. Thanks American Pickers!

Back in the '70's we had a half dozen junkyards within 20 miles. many a saturday was spent driving around scrounging parts.
Brand loyalty was also a huge thing as sometimes a you or some relative had a parts car out in the trees.

Back in the 70's I wasn't junk yarding looking for late model trucks (67-72 haha) I was looking for tri five stuff and earlier. It was fun because there was tons of very cool early stuff every where of all makes and you could afford it.

I wouldn't even consider going junk yarding ever again.
