Well this question is all over the threads here, but has the rearend been changed out or did you do a disk conversion? either way just search for gear ratio and you will find alot of info on this. It all comes down to jacking up one tire and turning the wheel. Put on a magnet or otherwise mark the driveshaft to count the rotations. 1 wheel rotation = 4.5 shaft rotations you have 4.55:1 or 1 wheel to 3 3/4 you got a 3.73:1. good luck.

If it's never been messed with there should be an ID tag on the differential.

a person could take cover off diff and look for the marking on the ring gear

also if you take off the diff cover you can count the amount of gears on the ring and pinion and divide them into each other and that will give you the ratio

On the top side of the passenger side axle housing, there are some letters and numbers that can be used to decode the rear gear ratio (that is assuming the gears have not been touched since it left the factory).

Re: Need help finding what rear end gear is in my 69 suburban vin # ce169z809866

1/2 vs 3/4 ton, engine size and transmission type will tell a lot.

1/2 ton 12 bolt: 3.07, 3.73, 4.11

3/4 ton dana 60: 3.54 (big block, etc)

3/4 ton corp 10 bolt: 4.10 (4x4), 4.57 (2wd)

my 72 burb 3/4 ton 2wd came with a stick on the column, 307 and 4.57 gears in the back. i have a 4.10 third member from a pickup to swap in, will be installing the OD on the saginaw and am switching to a q-jet (lousy 2 barrel = inefficient and no power).

3/4 ton 2wd pickups with a small block could get the 4.10 gear but it wasn't an option on the 2wd burbs in 72 according to my factory dealer brochure.

hmmmm........must have been ordered that way or someone pulled a switch, but according to my dealer brochure it wasn't a standard option on the burb in 72.

i have the thing in front of me right now. 2wd 3/4 ton.....4.57 standard (the ho52) and 3.54 and 4.56 optional (dana 60)

Look at the top of the passenger side axle tube and you will see some letters and numbers stamped into the tube. The letters can tell you the gear that was put in the differential originally. My 70 Burb had a TDE code. By searching the web and through help from this site, I was able to ascertain that it has a 3.07:1 gear.
