Pictures of the connector strap inside the door, by the wing vent

-
A member requested pictures of the connecting strap/brace inside the door by the wing vent window. This is a ’72 door and you can see the screw hole on the interior of the door and the "U" nut on the inside that the screw goes into. The strap is usually broken and this allows the door to spread apart in this area and creates a gap between the vent window and the outside of the door. The screw that was added to the ’72 doors prevented this from happening. You can see that this strap is cracked (3rd pic) even with the screw, but the screw still held it together....The door has to be partially disassembled to repair the strap if it is broken.

Thanks for posting Leon! I think I should be able to drill the hole in mine and I should be good to go. Any idea of the size of screw that is used?

Thanks Leon for the great pics. Does anyone have good shots of what it takes to do the "weld" version of the repair?

It's probably too late since your door is already painted, but I have a 72 passenger door that I could cut that piece out of and send to you if you wanted it "splice" it in. It's not just a hole. It does have some shape to it if I remember correctly. Let me know!

I noticed on the doors I'm repairing that there is a crack starting. I'll weld it up, but I'm also going to add the screw to each door, thanks for the pics Leon!

The sleeve that comes with WES' screw kit looks like if you drill the hole out just big enough for the sleeve to fit it should look pretty nice.

That's the piece that I'm preparing to cut out to install one-piece power windows. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to restore the rigidity of the door without that brace there? I can't convince certain family members to not slam doors, so now I'm a little worried about eliminating it.

No problem on the pics.

Yes, the ferrule acts as the trim piece and adds strength to the hole to keep the screw from pulling through. Just go easy when tightening it up....

I don't think there is any way to tie the inner and outer door together with one piece window kits installed. One thing you could do is to weld a stiffener on the inside of the door, as far up as you can get it on the outside skin. You may have to drill a few holes and plug weld it from the outside.

Leon I have the screws and ferrule kit on it's way. Last question, do you know the diameter of hole that I need to drill? Thanks for all of the help!

Sorry Rob I somehow missed this. Going by drill size it is 9/32". If you are going to try and indent the area I would go smaller until I got the indent made then finish drilling it to size.....

Re: Pictures of the connector strap inside the door, by the wing vent

Anyone have a solution for doors where the screw hole/dimple has been filled/painted?

What about a mechanical solution to the tabs? ie. rivets or a nut/bolt combo - squeeze the skins together, drill hole through tabs, rivet/bolt. thoughts?

I guess the only thing you could do is to drill the hole back out. You are talking about 1 1/2-1 3/4 inches between the inner and outer tabs and they are not very strong without the piece of metal between them. There is not much space in there to work on them either.

I just hold them together and weld them from the top with my wire welder.

I had cracks starting on the edges so I hit the corners and made a "seam" and put a few extra where they connect.

Love the pics just looking for more info and visual. Is the kit from WES for 67-71 doors or just the 72?

All of the pre 72 stuff splays out in this area letting water in.

I used pop rivets to fix my door. That was years ago. No problems.
