I never understood as to why it was so long either. Mine was about a foot over the rear carpet. I don't see an issue for shortening the carpet just make sure the ends are finished so pile doesn't come unraveled and pull apart on you. You think that the carpet manufactures would create a one piece carpet for the passenger compartment. I know it's a big piece but would look cleaner.
