68 one owner found on the farm

Yup,
That's the story behind my latest find. One owner that lived its life in Eastern Oregon, 20 or so years was spent in a barn..
Plans and build thread coming soon.

As she sits tonight..

Re: 68 one owner found on the farm

Looks like a great one and I'd love to see more pics including interior and underhood. The color looks pretty unique too as I dont know if I've ever seen one in that color. How did you find it, word of mouth, friend of a friend deal, EBay, Craigslist etc?

Re: 68 one owner found on the farm

So a bit more on the new edition,
While selling parts at the annual Portland Swap meet last weekend, I saw this Suburban while walking around. Even at first glance, I had a feeling I would have to have it… So, i got to speaking with the 2 guys who brought her there, As it turns out, we have a mutual friend.. no surprise there huh. Anyway, I asked about the history, and he explained that they had gone over to Eastern Oregon to pick up a SWB, and this had to go along as part of a package deal. Apparently, the guy who bought it new in Oct 68 did so to give it to his brother. It stayed in that family all this time, and about 22 yrs. ago was parked in the barn on the family farm. It moved outside a couple of years ago until sold to the two guys I dealt with. With it, came the original Oregon title in the original envelope, (how cool is that!) So, since they did not change ownership through DMV, I will continue to call it a one owner…

Odometer reads about 82,000

VIN decodes as follows

C= Chevrolet
C= 4x2
E= V-8
1= 1/2 Ton
6= Suburban
8= 1968
F= Flint

Color is Saddle & Off White

Engine is 327 with a 3-speed column shift (yup, she runs)

Manual steering and brakes

Hatch and tailgate

3 rows of seats

Options from the original SPID are as follows

RPO code Description
4555AC Saddle / Off-White
4V37C3 Chrome-Bumper Frt&RR
4P01AA Full Wheel Covers
4B98CA Side & Front Molding
4F59AA Front Stabilizer Equip
4P03AA Chromed Hubcaps
4B93B8 Door Edge Guards
4A11AA Tinted Windshield
4U63HG Push Button Radio
4Z61OH Custom Appearance Package
4Z53BC Ammeter-Oil Gauge
4A68BA Ctr Rear & Ctr 1st Seat Belts

Plans??

Well, initially I am going to be looking to do the following to get her in daily driver condition.
Swap front to 5 lug with Disc brakes ( I have a complete setup with dropped spindles)
Swap rear axle to 5 lug with 3.73 posi ( Add 4 in. dropped springs)
New u-joints
All new brake and fuel lines
Clean fuel tank as needed
New exhaust system
Install the rear passenger side glass (was broken at some point in the past)
Do thorough inspection, cleaning, and I may also clean paint the underside while I’m there..

Drive it!!!

Being an avid cyclist, I was looking for something to haul my bikes and gear, what could be better than this?

As most every one of these truck do, she has a few things to take care of, and I’ll outline that in a build thread once things get underway.. But for her age, she looks pretty damn good!!

More pics on the way later tonight

haven't searched for this yet, but is normal to have two options listed for wheel covers like this one has?

just curious

Re: 68 one owner found on the farm

been slow to get things going, my entire office moved across town over the past couple weeks. It took most of my time and has not left much daylight for me to look over things. I did manage to replace a leaking wheel cylinder and adjust the brakes, but they are certainly less than stellar.. I am hoping the rear quarter glass gaskets arrive soon so I can get the install done, and at least keep the elements out. Soon it will be moving from its current temp location (a friends carport) to my shop for some much need attention.

I'm thinking about a name for this, something keeping with the late sixties.. Any ideas?

I have been prepping for the upgrade to disc brakes, I have a complete 5 lug cross member already rebuilt and ready to go. at the same time, the rear axle goes in favor of a 68 with 5 lug axles and 3.73 limited slip internals.

I heavily leaning on going bucket seats with console, I have a rather cool houndstooth color combo in mind. that will be once i take care of a few other details..

I'll take pics as I go, and get them posted..

Thoughts on these wheels (again, keeping the sixties vibe)

15x8's & 10's

Once I lose some elevation, I bet i will want to go with some 20's but who knows.. I have these and they do fit the look I think

I like the wheels though they don't ring 60's to me.

Re: 68 one owner found on the farm

I don't think I've ever seen those style wheels before, they give me an 80s vibe. Maybe you can go with a tweed interior and a lime green and hot pink two tone with a nice swoosh down the side ... LOL, sorry, just goofin.

I hope you stay with 15's. Mags, Cragar five spokes, 200S, Original style Torq Thrusts ... Not the D's or what ever the newer ones are that are on everyone and their grandmas cars. Yes I know, I'm a little opinionated when it comes to wheels =)

I know you have a good eye, so it will be great no matter how you put it together.

lol,
Well you know, having multiple projects in play is really motivating me to get her reliable and on the road now!! so no fancy paint jobs anytime soon..

The front suspension is pretty much toast so that made the decision to upgrade to 5 lug and disc pretty easy.
Only real unknown is how sound the engine is.. Guess I'll be finding out soon when I go more than a 1/4 mile... So far so good.

I went ahead and started a build thread, calling her Project - Gold Member http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=669675, as there might be some serious altitude adjustment down the road..

I don't think so, the SPID calls it 4555AC Saddle/Off White..

Thanks, I am thinking maybe when I clean up the wheels, I could paint body color where the black is now.. Either that, or I find some 15x10's steelies for the rear and keep the caps..

Re: 68 one owner found on the farm

Not that I'm surprised, but I finally got time to validate the engine code, and turns out I have the normal L32 code 200HP 307.

Depending on how it really runs once I give it a once over tune-up, fluids, some new gaskets and such, I'll either run as is for now, or put one of my spare 350's in while doing the 5 lug swap. I'm already planning on pulling the nose to facilitate the brake swap so I can clean paint and refresh anything needed. And, with a 700R4 waiting in the wings, it will make the swap go much faster.
